Covers matter in all books… Ebook or print… Every
genre! You have a second or two to catch people’s attention while surfing the
web. Make the most of it.
On my blog, Fridays are Feminine Allure Fridays…and
I search for F/F covers that catch my eye.
This turned out to be a lot harder than I expected.
Some are clearly stock photos. Others are fabulous! But some are flat out scary!
Not just BDSM~~ oh she’s a tough Dominatrix scary. I mean icky.
I don’t post those nasty ones on my blog and I won’t
pick on anyone here. Author input into covers varies by publisher. However,
it’s still up to us to try and get a good cover!
As the subgenre grows, I hope to see more publishers
really working on good f/f covers! This is something we, as authors, need to be
vocal about…at least as much as we can.
Now for the self pubbed out there! This is not an area to skimp…generic covers are
obvious to authors and reader. The wrong image lets people skip right over that
book. If you don’t care enough about the story to get it a decent cover, why
should readers spend money on it? Give readers a cover they want to click on!!!
You have the power…
Readers…we do try. Authors sometimes have to fight
for good covers and loose. But fingers crossed you’ll seek out F/F stories and make
it the best year for lesbian fiction ever! What do you readers like in covers??
What grabs your attention? Tell us!
Now for a good cover! I was lucky enough to get a
great cover for my f/f short story last year. Suggestive, as it is erotic
romance, and it clearly shows two women! Not too much to ask, right?
Blurb:
Most women are turned off by Eve’s job working with reptiles in the Everglades.
Miranda is exception and Eve has fallen hard for her. Their chemistry is
undeniable but Miranda has a secret that could ruin everything. Hot sex in a
swamp proves they’re perfect together but sex doesn't solve everything. Can Eve
charm the truth out of Miranda?

Covers definitely matter. Like you said, it's the first thing I notice when shopping around. I will be honest that I tend to skip over covers with horrible covers. Unless I'm fooled by reading the synopsis first.

I love book covers, I am ashamed to say I've downloaded books without reading the blurb or the reviews just because I loved the cover :-/
I do like the cover of CRUSHED : )
And in a total act of blatant self promo, my cover for RULEBREAKER is kicking : ) Carina does a great job there, and I can't wait to see what they come up with for my next f/f!
Covers definitely catch my eye. It has to be colorful, show what the book is about. I hate generic covers that could go on any book. I want the cover to be about the story inside the covers. Crushed is a great cover--purple is a favorite color of mine and it shows it's f/f. Fantastic!
"Don't judge a book by its cover," but the cover DOES matter, especially for self-published authors. If you're a self-published author, spend money on a decent cover.
Covers do matter! Thanks for sharing CRUSHED! One thing I've noticed is that a lot of f/f covers can look like an add for soft core porn. I'm not complaining! But I think for f/f romances to reach a larger audience, the covers need to reflect the story without getting too graphic. (And this goes for m/m and BDSM as well).
