When I See a Book Cover Like This...

I want to give the poor guy a blanket. I also can't help but wonder if his dangly bits are chilled. His butt surely is. Imagine if those boulders he's sitting on had ice? Brr... Anyone else think the same?

From Dreamspinner Press.

But then these men seem cold also. At least they both have each other to generate some body heat, unlike naked angel man who is all alone freezing his holy balls on a big rock.

Stephenie Meyer Novella: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

I wonder how long this book will be on the best selling list? Another classy "Twilight" type cover.

From Publishers Weekly:
A Stephenie Meyer novella, THE SHORT SECOND LIFE OF BREE TANNER, is set for release from Little, Brown Children's on June 5 with an announced first printing of 1.5 million copies. The $13.99 hardcover, at 192 pages, is told from the point of view of Bree, a character originally featured in Eclipse. A dollar per book from the first printing will be donated to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.

The book will also be available online at breetanner.com for free from June 7 to July 5 "as a special thank you to fans." Meyer says, "I'd always considered The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner as something for the fans. They have been so supportive of all things Twilight."

Meyer notes, "When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide."

You can read more about this at USA Today.

I as so hoping Meyer would announce the release date for the sequel to The Host! I want to read that sequel like you wouldn't believe. For the life of me I can't remember who Bree is? Also paying $13.99 for a 192 page book doesn't appeal to me. But I do think it's great that it's also free to read for a month to read online and a dollar donated for each first print run book sold goes to the American Red Cross. A bit of funny with the charity chosen, if you think about the whole thing with vampires and blood sucking.

So Meyer fans, will this be placed on your to be bought list?

Patience Advanced Book Review *Lisa Valdez*

As I read Patience, a few things stood out for me:

The virginal heroine Patience has an interesting family trait: thick, distended nipples. She's also is skilled at giving fellatio because when she and her sisters where little girls, they spotted one of their maids "servicing" their butler. From that educational viewing, they decided to grab some cucumbers from their family's garden and practice their sucking techniques. Patience becomes so good at "servicing" cucumbers that she soon wins the, "very expert at not scoring the skin" blue ribbon. Patience also enjoys having her bottom spanked by the hero countless times, over the other incredible sexual pleasures his is more than willing to give her.

The hero Matthew deeply appreciates Patience's skills at fellatio, so much so, his release is much like the "fiery waters of the river Styx, his cum was a fierce and flowing tide." And as his river floweth, Patience "found her rapture while drinking voraciously of the virile communication he fed her."

This is only a small introduction to Lisa Valdez's erotic historical romance, Patience that has taken five years to be published. Back in 2005 when Lisa arrived on the scene, Passion was unlike anything Berkley published under their historical romance line. Now years later, many historical romances have followed Lisa Valdez's lead. I'm not sure if she was an influence, but she was one of few, including Robin Schone, and in a way, also Stephanie Laurens, who really upped the ante when writing sensual love scenes.

Patience picks up a few months after the heroine Passion, and the hero Mark, of Passion have been married. Matthew Hawkmore's (Mark's half-brother) reputation is in tatters. His witch of a mother has admitted to an affair she once had with her gardener. Matthew was created from that union and now all of British society knows he's a bastard. His ex-fiancé, Rosalind Benchley, who comes from one of the purest lines in England, has turned her back on him. Her father wants to ruin Matthew because he assumes Matthew hid the truth about his parentage. Matthew in turn wants revenge against Benchley, because Benchley is spreading vicious rumors about Matthew and hopes to push him into selling his pride and joy, the Grand West Railway. Matthew is enraged and wants to lash out against his skanky mother, his friends who now ignore him, and most of all Rosalind, who will soon marry another man, but still wants Matthew, but as her lover.

As Matthew is trying to recoup, he can't get another woman out of his mind. She's Patience Emmaline Dare, his new sister-in-law, and current obsession. He first met Patience while he was still engaged to Rosalind before everything hit the fan. And because he thought he loved Rosalind and wanted to be faithful to her, he chose to ignore those pangs of lust that have grown steadily for the fair Patience. But now that Matthew is a free man, he wants Patience. He feels if he can dominate her and have her succumb to his masterful lovemaking, he will feel whole again.

Patience wants Matthew dearly and hates to see him suffer so. While she stays with her sister and her new husband, she tries to confront her own demons of the past. She's very skilled at playing the cello and thinks of this instrument as her one true love. (No, she doesn't "love" her cello in that way you maybe thinking) In a few weeks, she will go off and train with a talented master of music, who coincidentally also taught Matthew to play the cello. Matthew refuses to let Patience leave and wants to be her only master and rule her body, mind and soul. He knows deep down Patience wants nothing more than to receive pleasure and give it in return. He wants to channel her inner submissiveness and have surrender to him. Matthew decides on a course of action that will change both their lives forever.

Patience accepts Matthew's rules, with only one consideration, her virginity must stay intact. Over the next few weeks she and Matthew will come together, and through heightened sexual pleasures, with no intercourse, he will reach deep down into Patience's soul and through his skilled caressed and kisses, she'll kneel at his alter, to the point she'll live and breathe Matthew and won't ever think of leaving him. When Matthew finally has Patience where he wants her, he'll claim her as his own.

Patience has pages of pages of intense foreplay of many sexual euphemisms for various sexual acts, nicknames for the female and male anatomy and enough purple prose to make your head spin. We have an alpha, brooding, forceful hero, who pushes the envelope in such a way that should be shocking, but isn't. He's all for giving out punishments to his virginal, lover of the cucumber, who wants nothing more than to bend over and take it. But that bending over is not what you think. See, Patience is very much a giver, her mouth is always open too receive Matthew. As a reward, Matthew spanks Patience, where she grows a fetish for it. I expected her tush to have a permanent hand mark, a tattoo if you will, from all the heavy paddling Matthew gives her. And even though Patience can barely sit, she wants even more.

These boundaries that should be broken and should come across as all consuming, passionate and tempestuous, are not. The sexual play Matthew and Patience act out another is very cold and calculating, much as if I was reading a gynecological how to exam. It's pretty sad to find yourself bored and not titillated in anyway, especially since this is considered to be an erotic romance. I was not engaged, aroused or connected emotionally in any way with Matthew and Patience. Matthew came across as a manipulative, whiny bore, and although I did like the way Patience was portrayed, she was just so long winded, especially during those tender, let's spill our souls, scenes with her sister. I was bored half-way through and it took a great deal from me to continue reading.

Something was very much missing between these two main characters. Whereas I felt the connection between Passion and Mark right from the beginning, I couldn't see anything special between Matthew and Patience at all. Regardless of the amount of sucking, sobbing, stretching, stroking, hungry tasting and touching, everything fell flat.

I really wanted to root for Patience and Matthew and find enjoyment when they came together, but they were just too dull. Even with the passionate pleas of claiming on Matthew's end, and Patience's inner turmoil and final therapeutic breakthrough, and the knowledge that their love has set them both free, I never believed in their mutual attraction and communion by fiery lust for one another.

I will say that Lisa does have a great historical voice, but overall the core of Patience is very much a thin wallpaper tale with a very tepid and lacking erotic appeal. (April 6th, Berkley)

Catch Me If You Can Book Review *LB Gregg*

Caesar Romano works for peanuts as an art assistant at the Peter Stuhlmann Gallery. He's in charge of an event showcasing the sculpted works of Jean Luc Pappineau, specifically busts of pop icons like Timberlake and Derek Jeter. Caesar especially wants to impress Mallory Albright of the Albright Gallery of Fine Art because he knows her assistant is going to give notice and Caesar would love nothing more than to take over the job and make more money.

The night goes downhill fast when Caesar's former lover, who is still in the closet, Shep McNamara, comes waltzing in with a bad spray-on tan, so bad that if the lights were turned off, he would glow in the dark. Caesar and Shep didn't end on the best of terms. Shep is an actor who's about to hit it big on television and must act straight.

Caesar can barely keep it together and almost chokes to death on an olive that he swallows the wrong way, while he chugs down a martini. All he wants is for the night to go off without a hitch and to sell Jean Luc's very strange, but expensive art. When a detective, with a great looking five o'clock shadow, by the name of Dan Green corners Caesar and asks him some very intrusive questions, Caesar is fed up and ready to throw in the towel.

The next morning, Caesar goes back to the gallery and finds a whole slew of problems. A passed out and hung over naked Shep is lying on the bathroom floor and the fifteen thousand dollar bust of Justin Timberlake has gone missing. Detective Dan starts poking his nose around and it irks Caesar beyond belief. Caesar has no choice but to join Dan in his investigation. Not only does he find out that his boss has a secret clown fetish, but people are being blackmailed left and right by the possible thief. Everyone around him are not what they seem, including Dan.

Caesar wants to be left alone, but Dan won't let him. Shep also keeps bothering him, so he won't spill his alternate lifestyle, which could destroy his career. As Caesar and Dan get closer to the truth, they find themselves in some sticky situations, such as hiding under the bed so they aren't caught and engaging in a little hanky panky, which makes Caesar uncomfortable. But at the same time, it leaves him aching for Dan's touch. Caesar just wants a normal life with enough money so he can finally move out of his grandmother's house. But first, he has to catch the criminal responsible for all this heartache.

Catch Me If You Can (Romano and Albright, Book 1) is a laugh a minute, frantic, loopy mystery tale with a great New York City feel. LB Gregg really can write fun and exciting characters that are almost soap-opera-like in their description. My mouth dropped a few times because I couldn't believe the out of control situation Caesar falls into. His reactions and thoughts had me in stitches because half the time he looks like he's going to have a nervous breakdown.

Whereas Caesar is a bit flighty and emotional, Dan is mysterious and laid back. They have great banter back and forth, and the love scenes between them are very steamy. LB Gregg has a great way of building up the attraction between these two that when they finally make love, it is everything and more.

Catch Me If You Can is very much like a screwball comedy where you'll be turning each page in anticipation to see what happens next. LB Gregg has written a book that's a rousing good time and the perfect start to a new, much welcomed series. (Purchase at Samhain Publishing)

WTFckery Or Not? You Decide

All the latest and greatest in some gag me worthy and eye rolling WTFckery!

1. Awesome WTFckery mash-up right here! Alien vs. Pooh! You click on the arrows and it will take you through each page, much like you're reading an actualy Winnie the Pooh story!

Poor Pooh and Eeyore... (I laughed myself silly over Eeyore and his new alien looking head)

2. Someone gag me please! From EW's Shelf Life: The MTV Jersey Shore look and attitude, brought to you by two of the show’s houseguests, J-WOWW and Ronnie have signed a book deal with St. Martin's Press. And this deal netted 6 figures! And do you know only one from this cast is from New Jersey?

3. This book cover scares me. I think it's because the ring in the nipple looks painful.

This excerpt looks cheesy also: "So, I’m at work last night, just doing my shit. Clearing out a bunch of old tat mags, trying to keep the place from being an utter dump, when this guy comes in. I’m watching him out of the corner of my eye as he checks the place out, and I’m wondering what the fuck he’s in here for. He’s doing all the right ‘new to tattoo parlor’ shit, looking at the health inspection certs and stuff, but he just looks so wrong in here."

The things you find on Amazon! And this cover... no words. B'tched: Erotic Tales of Men In Submission (Boner Books) by Kyle Cicero.

Synopsis: A man yielding himself into sexual submission. This book explores that dark secretly held fantasy or fear we all share as men with a series of stories that explore this genre. An ancient warrior fresh from his triumph, a Roman centurion, and a few three-piece suit hunks all find their minds broken and their bodies and souls completely enslaved to another man. Whether by use of drugs, hypnotism, or simply the act of succumbing to the force of a more dominating will thanks to a physiological head game, the methods in these tales let you, the reader, experience the highly charged sensuality that comes when men yield their minds and then their bodies to boundless pleasure.

4. WTF Hollywood? Just because 3-D movies may seem to be the next big thing, you want to raise move prices by how much?! Screw you. I really don't get the appeal of it all and will stick to 2-D, thank you very much.. Also 3-D glasses are so not fashionable. I blame Avatar and Alice in Wonderland for this! *shakes fist* From The LA Times:

"According to an in-depth story in the Wall Street Journal, a 3-D Imax movie at New York City's AMC Loews Kips Bay will now cost $19.50, up from $16.50. At an AMC theater in Danvers, Mass., a Boston suburb, 3-D ticket prices are going up 20% from $14.50 to $17.50. Ticket prices at local L.A. theaters are also going up, often by at least as two extra dollars a ticket. For now, I suspect the prices will be accepted by most moviegoers, since we're still in the "shock and awe" phase of 3-D moviegoing. But if Warners' "Clash of the Titans' " quickie 3-D conversion turns out to be a bust and moviegoers start becoming more wary about the tidal wave of 3-D films rolling into theaters over the next year, I fear that the price hike will create a backlash."

5. Fruit loop guy who thinks he's a vampire wants to run for President. From Azcentral:

"Not satisfied with living in Florida, Jonathon "The Impaler" Sharkey wants to move to Washington, D.C., to become the nation's first vampire president. Sharkey, 45.  He ran for governor of Minnesota in 2006 and also had short-lived bids for U.S. Senate in 2000, U.S. President in 2004, and U.S. President in 2008"

But keep in mind Sharkey is accused of "brainwashing" a 16-year-old in Minnesota. The two were engaged until last month. Her family now has a restraining order against Sharkey and claims his texts to her violate it. He reportedly admitted to harassing another 16-year-old Minnesota girl online in 2009. He was arrested in Tennessee several years ago and is currently on probation from Indiana after he was found guilty in 2009 of intimidating a judge. He served six months in a Marion Co. jail before his release. Sources confirm the Secret Service has had to keep him on its radar, since he moves around the country.

And he has a website also. If he ran against Edward Cullan, who would win?

6. And idea what this could be?

7. Seriously, who makes a piece of crap cake like this? Looks like a mutant tube of Cheese Whiz. From Cakewrecks:

8. I spy with my little eye... what do you see? A hint: Accidental Dong has vagina fridays.

9. Beyond cute WTFckery! Cat adopts orphan bunny. :56 seconds in I died from the cuteness. From Cute Overload.

10. And your Regretsy WTFckery of the week is this tasty treat (turd) that looks like something you would find in the back corner under your bed.

Enjoy this week's WTFckery!

March Madness Rushes Out and My DA BWAHA Obsession

The past few weeks in my family has been crazy. I have a father and sister who live and breathe college basketball, so much so that they refuse to leave their houses every time there is a March Madness basketball game on. I really thought my father was going to go into convulsions when Syracuse University lost to Butler in the West Regional Finals, 63-59.

I don't have March Madness basketball fever, but I do have another one. It's called DA BWAHA.

For those who don't know what DA BWAHA is, it is book tournament run by Jane from Dear Author and Sarah from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books where "we put up a field of 64 books and you vote until there is one book, one champion. The contest is twofold. First, you must fill out a bracket identifying which book will win each round. Then you vote."

Out of 64 books published last year, many from the romance sub-genres chosen by the readers, are voted on by the public at large until there can only be one.

And here is where I come in with my shameless begging, pleading and pimping.

The one book I want to win the whole kit and kaboodle is one of my most favorite books from last year called Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James. This wonderfully, hilarious and sweet contemporary, written by a true sweetheart of a woman, seems to be the true underdog of the tournament, taking down such heavy hitters like Erin McCarthy and Lisa Kleypas. Now Julie is up against another wonderful author, Larissa Ione in the final 8 elite.

I love my Larissa, of everything hot demon loving romance, but If Practice Makes Perfect beats Larissa's Ecstasy Unveiled tonight by midnight, Practice Makes Perfect will move onto the final four, and if at all possible, to the final two.

The fact of the matter is, I have no chance in hell of winning now. I'm not even in the top 100. This plea is not for me to win, but for Julie James, who with Practice Makes Perfect, has written a near perfect romance, in my opinion.

So my fellow fans and visitors of my blog, please go vote for Practice Makes Perfect and let's give this little book that couldn't, the chance that it could.

Mho Fho will also be one happy sheep if you do. We want to make Mho happy, right?

and don't forget my adorable kitty, Kiko...

Love Advice From Love Doctor Mho Fho *Scientist Stuck in Underwater Love Triangle*

Welcome to the latest Saturday Edition of Love Letters to Mho! The Love Doctor is in!

Hey there Mho!

I reckon I should just come out and say that I have a crush on two guys. One lives in a pineapple under the sea and has a pet snail, the other lives under a rock and pretty much acts like a rock most of the time. These two are the best friends and I would hate to ruin their friendship just because they both are so darn stuck on me.

The pineapple snail pet boy always smiles and loves to skip around and catch jellyfish in his net. Plus, he works and has money to spend. Usually we got for ice cream sundaes and he always buys. Rock boy doesn't work, but h's so adorable and very dedicated to pineapple boy, perhaps at times too much. There have been rumors that these two are more than just friends… if ya get my meaning?

Unfortunately, I'm a Texas gal and my trip to the bottom of the sea is only for a short time because I was sent to do some top secret research. So while I'm here should I "date" both boys and enjoy the ice cream sundaes they buy me or choose between the two, possibly destroying their friendship and have them fight over my love?

Yours,

S. Cheeks

Dear S. Cheeks,

You sound like a woman torn between two happy go lucky, yet perhaps slow thinking guys who'd rather spend their days chasing weird underwater creatures than grow up.

Because of the present situation you're in, where you really don't want to hurt anybody, plus gain the reputation of enjoying one too many sundaes and chasing jellyfish with one guy one minute and the other one the next, I would say you only stick to being friends with the dudes.

Also, if the rumors are true about these two silly boys being more than just friends, they may want you to be their ice cream sundae one night and both share you at the same time.

I would hold off on the romance until you return to Texas where the man wear big hats and have adorable accents.

All the best little lady,

Mho Fho

I was disappointed to see some of my favorites for 2009 were not nominated such as:

Demon Forged by Meljean Brook
Butterfly Tattoo by Deidre Knight
Bound by Your Touch and Written on Your Skin by Meredith Duran
Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James
Soulless by Gail Carriger
The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley
The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber
Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh

But again, I'm not certain if these book were submitted. I know Butterfly Tattoo and Practice Makes Perfect were submitted and I think it's a shame they are not in the Best Romance Contemporary category.

Even with the drama surrounding Harlequin, they have a strong presence as the published to beat.

And don't get me started on the lack of a GLBT Romance category.

What do you think of the nominations? What books were you surprised aren't listed?

Don't Kill the Messenger Book Review *Eileen Rendahl*

Melina Markowitz is a very busy woman. Not only is she working two jobs to make ends meets, but has another secret one where she doesn't get paid at all. Melina is known in the supernatural world as a messenger. Those creatures of myth and legend, such as vampires, werewolves and even imps do exist because they expect Melina to deliver packages and other messages to one another. Melina has no choice because if she ignores this call horrible things will happen to her and she'll get very sick. If only her mother had paid closer attention to her when she was three-years-old. Melina fell in their pool and almost died, but because of this near-death experience, she has developed this strange sixth sense and is one of the few in Sacramento, California available for the job.

As Melina finishes the night shift at her second job at the Sacramento City Hospital, vampire ER doctor, Alexander Bledsoe gives her a package to deliver to the head of the local vampire governing board. Melina tries to keep to herself when it comes to the sexy undead doctor, because he could gnaw on one of her arteries if he so chooses. She finds it odd that he wants her to deliver something to one of his own, but never the less she does what she's told. Before she can drop off the package, ninjas attack her in broad daylight. Melina should be able to hold her own against them because she's very skilled in martial arts and has been since she's been seven years old and works at the River City Karate and Judo with another messenger who was able to retire. Melina is given quite the beating by these ninjas and they steal the package.

She finds out the ninjas are responsible for terrorizing the city, especially the gangs by controlling Chinese vampires called kiang shi that tear gang members, limb to limb and eat their flesh. Melina witnesses this and places an anonymous call to the police. But because her undercover skills are very lacking, she is confronted by Office Ten Goodnight, who Melina nicknames Surfer Cop because of his good looks. Goodnight is onto Melina and she feels he's watching her every move, although he also seems interested in her in other ways. Dr. Bledsoe doesn't like Melina having a possible romance with Goodnight because she could let it slip about his people, among the other creatures she interacts with. There also maybe a bit of jealousy on his end. Melina is stubborn and refuses to listen to anyone, even when she's given a bloody calling card at the hospital as a warning. She continues to investigate in such places as a Taoist temple in Old Sacramento where the vampires are kept in an old crypt, controlled by a man, with a ring of bell, who can cause more bloodshed and destructions the likes of Sacramento has never seen. And when a close friend of Melina ends up dead because of her meddling, she turns to Goodnight and Bledsoe to help her stop these criminals before more innocent people die.

Don't Kill the Messenger should have been an original, thrilling urban fantasy, but what I read instead was a re-hash of every single urban fantasy I've read over the past few years. Eileen Rendahl does try something different, especially with the heroine Melina, but it didn't work because of her overall lack of a role as a messenger, which is conveniently pushed to the side because of the way Melina stumbles onto this underworld of Chinese vampires. She really does some too stupid to live moves and I really couldn't get a handle on her motivation, and her thoughts were so scattered all over the place. She comes across as more of an airhead, where one minute she's focused on something important, and then the next something very silly and immature that doesn't have anything to do with the overall story.

Melina's romance with Ted Goodnight had promise, as well as the idea of a possible love triangle including the vampire doctor Bledsoe. But because Melina is so lacking as a character, I couldn’t see why these two men would even be interested in her. Also the sex scenes seem tacked on, and the constant reasons why Melina is such a loner and how she's difficult to get alone with grated on my nerves.

The gruesome scenes with the zombie like Chinese vampires were also boring and didn't shock in anyway. At times I felt that Ms. Rehndahl was trying too hard with her writing because she knew Don't Kill the Messenger had to be different to keep the reader interested.

Because Don't Kill the Messenger didn't hold my attention, I won't be reading the second book in this series. Melina was just too flighty with her thoughts and actions, along with her overall lack of intelligence. This one is a pass. (Berkley)
