Danielle Steel Denies Being a Romance Author and I Become Angry Like the Hulk

I'm channeling the Hulk inside of me tonight as I clicked on a post where Danielle Steel denies being a romance author.

After selling 113 books, Steel said during an interview on the CBS morning show that, "They're not really about romance. It's an element in life. But I think of romance novels as more of a category, and I write about the situations we all deal with. Loss and war and illness and jobs and careers, and good things, bad things, crimes, whatever. And I really write more about the human condition."

Excuse me Ms. Steel, but who was your target audience who bought those 113 books and gave you millions of dollars? Excuse me while I go hurl over your statement that romance is a category and doesn't deal with real like situations.

Shame on you as you thumb your nose at a genre and the people who love this genre that supported you and your work.

Eh, I don't like her snide comments on the genre, and I figure some of her books DO probably count as romance.

But in general, I dont' think of Danielle Steel as a romance writer. She's not. Frankly, her work bores me... romance in general doesn't.

And we all know that romance can definitely have plenty to do with the 'elements of life.'

If she wants to know it, it just makes her look lesser. It's not worth me getting angry over.

A lot of romance readers really don't consider her stuff romance, though. I'm not surprised she doesn't, either.

Er... if she wants to KNOCK it, meaning romance. not know it.

She was one of the authors I started reading way back in the days when I was looking for romance books.

Next she'll say her books aren't Lifetime movies in the making. heh.

I can't remember who on twitter said it, but I will agree.. I think DS started OUT doing more romance-sort of stuff.

Her later works? Not so much. I view it as women's fiction-although she might hate that label as well.

Not that I really care... O.o

OMG she ISN'T a romance author. Her books do NOT belong in romance and she shouldn't be in romance. It is like being mad Sparks says he doesn't write romance, he doesn't.

I say this having at one point (a long time ago) having read way too many DS books and would have never thought of them as romance then nor do I now and HATE it when people try and pass her off as romance - she isn't.

Although like sparks I am sure the genre is happy to count her sales... ::shrug::

Her older books had better romance plots in them and were better novels all the way around then the few I have read recently. I think Rogue was the last one I read and finished and it was horrid.

I haven't read that many Danielle Steel novels, but I've always thought of her as a romance novelist, personally. Although I don't think her books appear in the romance section of the bookstore anymore....

God help us if Nora Roberts decides she's not a romance novelist.

I started reading her books years ago and considered them romance. Then they all started to seem similar and I haven't read her work in like a zillion years. Oh well...if that's how she feels.

I have to agree that she's not a 'romance' author. She's more of a chick lit author. Some of her books are romantic but not specifically. I think I've only enjoyed two of her books & I LOVE romance. When I read her works their is so much emotional relationship crap in them it distracts from what I'd prefer to be the main focus.
Sorry, Katie - I have to disagree on this one.

It was a terrific topic of discussion, though!!

I read a few of Danielle Steele's books back in the 90s which I would have considered romance. I haven't read anything by her since then, but from what I've heard of her later books (I still have a friend who reads her stuff), I wouldn't consider them romance.

It's been a loooong time since I've read any Steel but I never considered her a romance author. Still, her comments are total BS. To make a sweeping generalization that all romance doesn't cover things like the human condition, loss, war, etc. is ridiculous.

My response to her comment was like... Geez, bite the hand that feeds you already! Shes made a lot of money writing "romance" books. That's her bread and butter and I kind of understand that she wants her writing to be more than just romance... but you have to have a little respect for what got you where you are....

I don't think of Steel as a romance author any more than I'd think of Nicholas Sparks as a romance author.

Ridiculous!

Her book summaries never appealed to me, but she has always been shelved in the romance sections of my local bookstores. I believe she still is, although I can't say for sure. My eyes would kind of just glaze over her stuff and on to what sounded more like romance to me.
