Forbes Highest Paid Authors Listed

Forbes magazine has posted the top 10 highest paid authors whose earrings are a combined $270 million over the 12 months to June 1st. And they are:

1. James Patterson ($70M) "involves penning 17 books by the end of 2012 for an estimated $100 million."

2. Stephenie Meyer ($40M) "not releasing a new title in 2009, she earned $40 million over the year. About $7 million of that came from movies adapted from the Twilight series."

3. Stephen King ($34M) "$8 million of which we estimate came from backlist sales. His 51st novel, Under the Dome, was released in November, selling 600,000 copies."

4. Danielle Steel ($32M) "is embracing the e-book revolution--she recently announced that all 71 of her books would be digitally released on Amazon."

5. Ken Follett ($20M) "When The Times of London recently asked its readers to vote for the greatest novels of the last 60 years, Follett's The Pillars of the Earth came in at No. 2 (just behind To Kill a Mockingbird)."

6. Dean Koontz ($18M) "in 2008 he was the world's sixth most highly paid author, tied with John Grisham at $25 million annually."

7. Janet Evanovich ($16M) "Her 2006 book signings attracted 2000-3000 people each."

8. John Grisham ($15M) "As of 2008, his books have sold over 250 million copies worldwide."

9. Nicholas Sparks ($14M) "In 2008, Entertainment Weekly reported that Sparks and his wife had donated "close to $10 million" to start a Christian private school, The Epiphany School, which emphasizes travel and life long learning."

10. J. K. Rowling ($10M) "estimated Rowling's fortune at £560 million ($798 million), ranking her as the twelfth richest woman in Great Britain."

Think any one of these authors would adopt a slight eccentric redhead with a perverted pet demon sheep?

Suzanne Collins should be up there after this coming week! I've already ordered 3 copies of Mockingjay out of sheer impatience!

I know that both adults and children have read the Harry Potter and Twilight books (and that both authors will have received royalties from the movies), but...it just goes to show that the power of the younger dollar in a force to be reckoned with *grin*

I wonder how much Nora Roberts earns? She should be making money, considering I myself contribute to both her Roberts and J.D. Robb novels.

I don't get how Nora was not on this list. I would have thought she was ahead of some of the other authors

I'm surprised JK Rowling is so low on the list! At least 4 of the ten authors are female--that's almost half.

I wish I made that much. I bet JK Rowling is not complaining, y'all! That's a cool chunk of change regardless where she is on that list.

Damn.

Keep in mind this is what they made from June 2009 to June 2010. Can you imagine what their total net worth is?
