My fan author letter is written to the author who wrote one of my favorite books, including my all time favorite romance. She is Paullina Simons.
Dear Paullina Simons,
Thank you for writing such a powerful, epic historical romance with The Bronze Horseman and its sequel, The Bridge to the Holy Cross. No book before, during or after can compare to your poetic and luscious heartbreaking story of war, starvation, death, angst, romance, undying love and the belief that everyone has a soul mate. The Bronze Horseman has proved that love conquers all, and in this case, it is not only the love shared between a man and a woman, but one that a parent has for their children and the bond two sisters have for each other even beyond death.
I really can't remember how or why I decided to pick up The Bronze Horseman. The idea of reading a 660 page book about a young girl in St. Petersburg, Russia set during World War II had no interest for me. I really should have passed The Bronze Horseman by, but didn't, and because of that I was so very glad.
One Thursday night back nine years ago, I went to my local library and picked up this massive hardcover book not sure what to expect. I then went home and started reading and simply could not stop. I was close to calling out from work the next day because I couldn't stop reading. Not since Stephen King's It or The Stand has a book made me want to forget everything around me. You should be pleased to know that I did go into work, but as soon as Friday night came, I pushed all other things to the side and sat down to read The Bronze Horseman from beginning to end. The Bronze Horseman is the only book in my twenty years of hardcore reading where I sat from 7pm until 5am in the early morning hours, where I read straight through and saw the sun rise. After I finished, I could barely see, think or speak. You ruined me. For almost a month after, I didn't pick up another book because your words and stunning portrayal of an heart wrenching romance that occurs between Tatiana and Alexander could not compete with any other romance I've read up to that point.
From the minute seventeen-year old Tatiana wears her favorite dress with the red roses and sits down to eat an ice cream cone, before the horrors of the war hits her town and family, showcasing her soon to be loss of innocent, she sees a soldier across the street staring at her. He is Alexander and will change her life forever. He is her future, the one man who will be her soul purpose in living. The moment Tatiana and Alexander claimed one another for their own, I was invested in such a way where I needed to see their happily ever after, to know after all they have been through, they would walk off into the sunset together, holding hands and eating blueberry ice cream until they reached a very old age.
Those scenes where Tatiana can't have Alexander because he has been with her sister first, to the near starvation and death of Tatiana's entire family, the climax where she and Alexander are separated, only to be reunited and act on their passion in such a frenzy, beautiful, 150 pages of non-stop joy and love making, only to have them separated again where your ending, the end all and be all of book cliffhangers, nearly destroyed my very being. I had to wait 4 years for the sequel, where I paid the most ever for a book. I just had to have The Bridge to the Holy Cross shipped from Europe to the States because I simply couldn't wait to know what happens to this couple.
And then Tatiana and Alexander gave me the peace I had hoped for, where they danced together under the moonlight in each other's arms, where their souls were finally at peace. The epilogue in The Bridge to the Holy Cross is the complete opposite from The Bronze Horseman and made my heart jump into my throat. It is beyond perfect and every time I re-read it, tears come to my eyes. To this very day, Tatiana and Alexander are my all time favorite couple, where if I ever am lucky enough to give birth to a boy, I would name him Alexander.
Thank you… thank you for this:
He bent down and kissed her freckles. "You can't continue? My cart wheeling queen of Lake Ilmen?" Smiling, he shook his head. "You will find a way to live without me. You will find a way to live for both of us," Alexander said to Tatiana as the swelling Kama River flowed from the Ural Mountains through a pine village named Lazarevo, once when they were in love, and young.
Yours,
K. Garrabrant

Wow, what a touching letter. I love it when we find a book that we totally love but think "What the heck was I thinking when I bought that?" Maybe our psychic book connections do work and we find the perfect books when we need them. Great job.
Beautiful touching letter KB. I've not heard of this author her stories but I will certainly look them up.
Thank you for sharing.
It's a priceless gift when books touch us to our very core.
What a great letter! *sniffsniff*
What a beautiful letter. After reading this I went to amazon and bought these two books immediately. I also bought Tatiana & Alexander in Hardback.
I hope Ms. Simons sees this incredible letter.
Thanks for participating!
*cries* He kissed her freckles!!!
What a lovely letter KB :)
Alexander does a whole lot more than just kiss her freckles. heh heh
What a beautiful letter! I love that you couldn't read another book for so long afterwards - what a testimony to Ms. Simons' writing.
Thank you for sharing!
Wonderful letter Kate!! I have never read this author, looks like I need to give her a try. :)
Holiest of book holys - definitely putting this one of the wish list.
All I can say is, wow! Going to buy these books ASAP. What a tribute!
On Paullina's website she mentions the Bronze Horseman is "in development" to be turned into a movie! If it was done right, I would love to see a movie adaptation (if it was authentic to the book).
I'd never heard of this book until recently when Kristie(J) recommended it to me. I recently bought it from Amazon. This letter has helped move it to the top of my TBP!
What a wonderful letter, KB. It's such a great thing when a book/series creates such a bond with a reader.
I am so glad that you have written to Paullina. You know that I love these books too, and count them as some of my favourite ever reads.
I was so glad to be able to meet Paullina when she was in Australia a couple of years ago. She was very gracious and entertaining to meet. She constantly tops the best seller lists here, and her books are often named in the Top 100 reads. I will never understand why she is not better known in the US.
Lovely. Absolutely lovely. :)
LOVE the letter Kate!!!!
This is a terrific fan letter! I've never heard of the author, but I had a similar reading experience to yours when I read The Stand so I understand your comparison. I'm going to have to look into this one! :)
A wonderful letter..
The Bronze Horseman is one of my Mom's favourite books..

Thanks everyone. The Bronze Horseman and The Bridge to the Holy Cross are 2 books that follow me wherever I go. It may sound silly, but when I am lost in my mind or day dreaming I will think of a few scenes from these two books and want to go back and re-read again.
Great letter, KB! Did you review one of these books on your blog a while back? The cover looks familiar.
If ever a comment from a blogger has encouraged me to read a book, this has trumped it! The passion you have for these books comes across so well. Thank you so much Katie for sharing your love for these books :)
What a wonderful tribute Katie.
I enjoyed reading it. I love when a book has that effect on a person.
Great letter! I love it when a book impresses so much that you don't want to pick up another book for almost a month. That doesn't happen a lot, not to me at least :)
(coming out of lurking again because this book is worth it)
Have you read The Summer Garden? It finishes up the Tatiana and Alexander story :) It does go a little beyond to the later generations, but it's just as good and oh so angsty at first because Alexander and Tatiana have to learn how to live together again. Ugh so good.
Vivian: The way Holy Cross ended was perfect for me. And some of the events that happened in The Summer Garden about Anthony and Tatiana's friend plus the possibility of Alexander doing something questionable while they were married is something I'm not sure I wanted to read about.
Would you say the Summer Garden is just as emotional as the first 2 books?
Butting in. I'm not Vivian, but I would say that it is pretty much up there in terms of emotion. There were issues in The Summer Garden, but I do know quite a few people for whom TSG is their favourite, whereas for others it will always be the first and second books. I have reviewed it on my blog (no spoilers) or if you want to know more let me know.
I was actually really upset at some of Alexander's actions, but it was worth it in the end, IMO. Plus, of course it's Paullina Simons so everything makes sense character-wise, it's not something that's thrown in to make an already long book longer or for the sake of more drama.
And yes, definitely as emotional. There's this great scene where Alexander strips naked and asks Tatiana to look at him, scars and all, because that's who he's going to be for the rest of their marriage. It just made me cry buckets, and continues to be one of my favorites scenes in all romance novels.
I will admit though that I didn't seem to like Tatiana and Alexander as much as you did, so my favorite books out of the trilogy are the first and last.
This maybe a spoiler so beware...
The part in T&A where Alexander hallucinates and thinks he sees Tatiana while he is in the woods, where he almost walks off and wants to die hit me so hard.
So many sob worthy scenes. But the epilogue. Sigh.
Wow, what a fantastic letter! I absolutely adore The Bronze Horseman trilogy. To me it has been the best epic romantic series, that I have ever read. I totally agree with how after reading the series it does ruin you for a while. Will my own Alexander please show up already :)
BTW, the trilogy is being reissued/published by Avon A. TBH was reissued last year, Tatiana & Alexander comes out in June (2010) and The Summer Garden in February (2011).
Time for a re-read :)
Paulina Simons did read this blog it was posted on her facebook page this morning: Paullina Simons Kati, a wonderful reader, wrote me an extremely lovely letter over at her blog. Here's one of my favorite parts: "To this very day, Tatiana and Alexander are my all time favorite couple, where if I ever am lucky enough to give birth to a boy, I would name him Alexander."
I'm always so touched to see how I've moved other people. Click ...through on the link to read the whole thing. (And there are some Bronze Horseman spoilers in there, if you haven't read the trilogy yet!)
I have finally read The Bronze Horseman after having it lay in my TBR pile for months. It is right up there with Gone With the Wind for me. I loved it. I can't believe I didn't read it sooner. I am speechless.
