Guest Post: You Can Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

The naughty Tam from Tam's Reads filling in for the day...

Not many people may know that I loooove to bake. I’m one of those Moms who felt guilty if she didn’t make her child an interesting cake from scratch for her birthday. My most successful was a domed turtle filled with raspberry mousse for her party at the reptile zoo. When I cut it open some adorable little 7 year old said “Cool, it’s got guts inside.” Ahhh, a Mom success.

I would bake a fancy cake every day, of course I’d need a passel of people (aka hot smexy boys) to eat them because I neither want nor need that much cake, but I do love finding interesting and intriguing cakes on-line. So I thought I’d share some of my favourite cakes with y’all as I guest post here today at KB’s place while she’s off relaxin’ and having fun without us.

Mondrian (http://www.cakewrecks.blogspot.com/) search Google images to see his work) is one of my favourite artists. My daughter found this picture for me and then I found out it is made at a bakery in San Francisco. Be prepared ladies who are joining me there this fall, I’m on a mission.

I’ve seen these rainbow cakes around the web and I would love to try one. I like the one with the colored cake but the colored layers are also beautiful.

And just so you don’t think I’ve completely lost it and have gone all high class and artsy with this post, you have your naughty cakes. Because really, what says “You’re getting married!” or “You’re 18! Yay!” like a giant ejaculating penis?

Or maybe your practices are a bit more out of the norm. For the hard-core felcher (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=felching+straw) in your life, something made to order.

Perhaps something a bit smaller, and all the rage these days, is more your cup of tea. How about cupcakes? Who doesn’t love cupcakes? Sweet and tasty. Yummy.

Are you into the leather scene? Maybe this is the cake for you.

Maybe in my next life I’ll be a baker, who can eat as much cake as she pleases without gaining a pound. :)

Oh good heavens! I was all set to write about the cakes I made for my son's birthdays until he said he'd really rather have Dairy Queen, and then I scrolled down to the felching cake and just... just... who the hell makes cakes like that? And how do you find them?

vw: explar. Explar it to me, please!

It's actually not a felching cake truth be told, it's supposed to be a thermometer, I think it was for nurses day or something. It was on Cake Wrecks, but seriously, it's a straw, let's all call a spade a spade. LOL

Now I've gotten over my Mommy guilt and we just buy a fancy cake at the bakery, one of the expensive ones, but when she was little I have to say I pulled off some cute cakes. :-)

Thanks for clearing that up, Tam! I'll bet those bakers never even heard of felching. Pervs R Us.

The first year I didn't bake the cake I was disappointed - how could he not want a mom-made cake? After that, I was like: oh yay, less work for me!

It's hard for us Mom's to let go sometimes. When she was about 12 she asked for a Rolo cake or Caramilk or something from the bakery and so I went for it and it changed my life. (I should be doing an infomercial for changing your life through cake. LOL) Now I'm good with that. I always used to make something from scratch for potlucks as well, but I've managed to get over that too and if I don't have time, you get something pre-made.

The rainbow cakes are abso-freakin-lutely gorgeous! The multi-coloured layers look incredible.

Do you have any fave recipes *hopefully simple enough for me to attempt*?

Tam said...

I don't really have any recipes s7anna, but I do find cheesecakes are incredibly easy and impress the hell out of people because they think it's difficult. My only hint is don't use a recipe that calls for liquid (beyond melted chocolate) added to a cheesecake recipe unless you are really good because I find they split too easily. A more dense batter works better. This looks like a pretty basic chocolate Cheesecake recipe but don't be afraid to experiement. Add white chocolate chips, or chopped nuts of your choice, just don't add liquids. Top it how you like, with canned cherry pie fillling, or caramel sauce and nuts, or just with whipped cream and shaved chocoate. That's half the fun, making it exactly the way you like it.

Also for getting colors like in the rainbow cake you MUST use gel food coloring. The liquid stuff we all used as kids just doesn't cut it. You can buy gel colors at cake or craft stores or even some grocery stores carry the basic colors now. You get a DEEP color, you could even make a truly black cake without it, it would be gray. Hmmmm. That intrigues me. It's my daughter's birthday and I was going to invite some friends over for cake, maybe I could make a black and white cake. You've inspired me unintentionally. Might be kind of weird to eat black cake but that's half the fun. :-)

I nearly spit coffee over my monitor when I saw the "thermometer" cake at Cake Wrecks. Heh. The rainbow cakes are gorgeous!

My brother and I both always wanted the same cake for our birthdays (angel food with divinity frosting), but we always wanted something special done to them - at the most simple, we'd ask for confetti angel food cake. At its worst, I asked for purple. My mom did achieve a very, very dark purple... the angel food rose to about half its usual height and looked like a festering bruise.

Tam said...

LOL If she used liquid food coloring she might have had to add so much to get it dark it would have been too liquidy to rise properly. I like angel food cake with strawberries.

The advantage of the gel colors is you only need a smidgen to get a great color. Some day I will try the rainbow cake but I really think I'm going to give a black and white cake a go for this weekend. But now I need fondant because as usual I can't be bothered to do things the simple way, I have to go crazy and make something worthy of Ace of Cakes. Sigh

I've never had fondant...what does it taste like?

Tam said...

Fondant is basically just pure sugar and a few other things mixed in. Not very tasty but it's the stuff you see them rolling out on TV and making all kinds of cool shapes with it. So it's easier to manipulate than regular icing from a can (which is where I get my icing from). You have to knead it like bread to get it softened up and then you can knead in colors, roll it out and drape it over the cake then using a touch of water glue on the shapes you cut out.

For my daughter's birthday I baked up a bunch of Big Top Cupcakes and let the kids decorate them. Sadly, that is the extent of my baking expertise. I am all thumbs in the kitchen.

Tam said...

Young kids love decorating though Stephani. They probably loved it.

I've always loved baking but working full-time and not having anyone to eat it kind of takes the joy out of it.

lol OMG Tam that is too funny. I personally like the penis cupcakes and the rainbow cakes.

That huge penis cake looks like it's got...and I'm sorry if this grosses you out...but it looks like it's got maggots and ants crawling all over it. Ewwwww!!!

And I'll take baking over regular cooking any day of the week!

Tam said...

Ha! They do Tracy. LOL But it has lovely hairy balls. :-) I'm sure someone got a real kick slicing the cake.

I'm with you on the baking, I can be far more creative in that arena than the regular cooking one.

Kris said...

I am going to see that felching cake image in my head for the rest of the day. Thanks Tam. Thanks a lot.

And would you believe that my word veri is splitio??

Dear. God.

Tam said...

Splitio those cheeks and have at it. :-D

Think of the penis then. Make that for your BB for his next birthday. :-)

The rainbow cake is so pretty, love it! The big penis is funny, the butt straw cake is disturbing. the leather cute but my favorites are the cupcakes. OMG, those are fabulous!

Sadly, I lack the domestic goddess gene. I've never baked a cake from scratch. I'm a whiz with the box cakes and pretty good at decorating them but that's about it.

Tam said...

I'm not above using a box cake Lily. Most people, especially kids, can't tell the difference and for most working people it's a lot faster.

When will I learn not to click the links?!? Hubs teases me about being naive, I didn't think I was but maybe he's right.

Love the rainbow cake and the bondage cake!

Tam said...

Sorry Patti. LOL I'm always a bit leary about going to urbandictionary, you just never know what you'll find, sometimes more than you want. :-)

The "hairy balls" on the giant penis cake made me crack up. The thermometer cake just made me feel kind of queasy, however. I wonder how hubby would react if he came home and found me making penises out of fondant? ;)

Tam said...

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when that happens Abbie. LOL

How did you make those penis cupcakes? Did you use a mold are they made of fondant? I'm going to make a cake for the bachelorette for my niece pls help

Tam said...

I didn't make them anon, my abilities would have made it look like hot dogs stuck on top. I found the picture but they look like they are made of fondant. You could try an adult toy store in your city. They often have chocolate novelties like chocolate/candy penises so you might find something you could use on the cake there. You can order things on-line as well but I'm not sure how much time you have before the party. Call them and ask if you don't want to start strolling in and out of toy stores. Good luck and hope you have a fun party.
