After reading Louisa Edwards' contemporary romance, On the Steamy Side, I asked her if she would be able to set up interview with her cast of characters. After a few phone calls, the meeting was scheduled and I took a few hours to sit down at the restaurant Market to ask a few questions that were on my mind...
KB: Welcome everyone to Market and the cast of On the Steamy Side. Louisa was lucky enough to score me an interview with her characters from this romantic "sizzling" contemporary.
With me today is Devon Sparks, Cooking Channel's mega superstar of One-Night Stand with Devon Sparks, Lilah "Lolly" Tunkle, Grant Holloway, manager of Market and two key members of the staff, sous chef Frankie, and server Jess. Thanks everyone for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down and talk with me.
Devon, smiling charmingly: Of course! It’s lovely to meet you—Katiebabs, was it? What a sexy name.
Lilah: Okay, hot stuff. Dial it down a bit, or you’ll make the poor girl blush.
KB: I've heard it's been a crazy two weeks with Market's owner, Adam Temple away. How is everyone getting along?
[general laughter]
Grant: Well—there may have been a few tense moments. But I think, overall, the kitchen is handling the change in leadership very well.
Lilah: Oh, honey, it’s so nice that you haven’t forgotten your Southern roots! That was a beautiful example of pretending to compliment someone while simultaneously stabbing them in the heart.
Frankie: Yeah, and it weren’t exactly the truth, either. If Captain Wanker, here, [F indicates Devon by pointing his lit cigarette at him] doesn’t stop tarting up Market’s menu with ridiculous additions, Adam won’t have a restaurant to come home to.
Devon: Look, just because you can’t handle the more advanced cooking techniques…
Jess, hissing: Guys! Interviewer! Seriously, can we maybe save this for later?
KB: Lilah, what made you come all the way from Virginia to Manhattan? You're pretty new to the Market staff, or were. Why were you fired? Also, what are these rumors about you becoming a nanny for Devon's son for a month?
Lilah: To be fair, I was maybe not born for the life of a busgirl. The skills didn’t come naturally to me, you might say.
[Devon snorts; Lilah ignores him.]
Lilah (cont.):Whereas I’ve been taking care of kids my whole life, first my little cousins, and then as a school teacher, so I guess it makes sense that Devon wanted me to look after his son. That’s not why I took the job though. I agreed to be Tucker’s nanny because he needs me. And so does his father.
KB: How is it working for Devon? I've heard he can be quite difficult, as in being a diva.
Lilah, bristling: Actually, it’s been wonderful. Tucker is a love, and Devon is…well, he’s working hard at learning to be a good dad.
Devon: Jesus, Lilah Jane…
Lilah, sharply: What have I told you about taking the Lord’s name in vain?
KB: Devon, you've fired your publicist and your dinner service has been less than ideal. Also the dinner guests have been hearing some saucy language coming from you in the kitchen. What do you say to that?
Devon, regaining his equilibrium: I say, if the guests don’t want a show, then they shouldn’t come to one of my restaurants. Forty million viewers for my last Cooking Channel special tell a different story. Sure, maybe I get a little heated, on occasion, but trust me. If you had to deal with knuckleheads like Frankie, over there, you’d yell, too.
Frankie, smirking: Ta very much, I’m sure.
KB: Why did you choose Lilah to become your son's nanny? Is there something else going on between you?
Lilah: I’m not sure that’s an appropriate…
Devon, sitting up straight: Let’s end that line of questioning right there. Whatever is going on between Lilah and me is our business, end of story. She’s not like anyone I’ve ever met, and I will be damned if I see her dragged through the muck the way I’ve been.
Grant, looking at Lilah: Wow, that was…fairly heroic, actually.
KB: Grant, I noticed you don't seem too happy about Devon and Lilah being together. Could this be jealousy on your part?
Grant: What, you think I’m jealous? No. No, Lolly and I are friends. Best friends, for a long time, but still. No jealousy here. Some concern—worry for her mental health, that’s she’s gotten involved with a celebrity chef famous for his, ahem, bad behavior.
KB: I've also heard some very interesting rumors about you Grant. What's the deal with you and the new bartender Devon has hired here at Market?
Grant: Oh! You heard about…? I knew it—I knew Christian wouldn’t be able to keep his mouth shut! I can’t believe he spilled my secret. I thought anything said to a bartender was like something said in the confessional. I can’t believe you know about…wait. I get it. You asked a leading question, hoping I’d get upset and let something go! Well, I’m on to you, missy. You’re not getting anything else out of me.
KB: Frankie, you have quite the reputation in the kitchen. Where did you learn your culinary skills?
Frankie: Oh, it’s my culinary skills you want to hear about, is it? Because that’s not the only reputation I have in the kitchen. If you know what I mean, and I think you do.
Jess, sinking down in his chair: Stop it.
KB: Is there someone special in your life you come home to at night?
Frankie, taking a long drag off his cigarette: Yeah, there is, actually; someone far too special for me. In fact, I don’t expect that state of affairs to last much longer. There’s a whole world out there waiting for him, college and whatnot. If nothing else, there’s a dorm room with his name on it; he deserves that kind of experience.
KB: Jess, you look little pale in the face. Are you feeling okay? Is there something you know about Frankie you would like to tell us?
Jess, through gritted teeth: Nothing, Katiebabs. Just another conversation that really needs to wait for a more private moment. When I can make it clear that I don’t want frat parties and dorm life and being around a bunch of drunk college kids all the time—I just want…never mind.
KB: Hmmm sounds like something else is cooking in the kitchen besides food. Since the majority of you are such culinary experts, what are your favorite types of meals to dish up? Have any suggestions for a single woman who isn't too skilled in the kitchen?
Devon: Hmm…a single woman who isn’t skilled in the kitchen. Why don’t you just go out to eat? Market is nice, or one of my Appetite Restaurants in Manhattan, Chicago, Las Vegas, or Miami would be even better.
Lilah: Oh, stop it. There’s no reason Katiebabs can’t cook something delicious for herself! Especially if you don’t mind leftovers, sugar. My favorite meal to cook is probably collard greens and cornbread—that mess of greens will look like a lot to start out with, but let me tell you, it disappears awful quick when you cook it down with apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, caramelized red onion, and red pepper flakes.
KB: Since you all know Louisa pretty well, what type of person is she? Have any low down dirty gossip you can share with us about her?
Frankie: I’ve actually known her the longest, I think. Jess and Grant, almost as long, but I’m pretty sure she met me first. Not sure if it counts as gossip, exactly, but my favorite thing about her is we have the same taste in music. None of that pop/country shite for her! She’s into the Ramones, the New York Dolls, Lou Reed, and of course, the great Patti Smith.
KB: Thanks everyone for this awesome interview! Now I think you all should go into the kitchen and whip me up something good, because I'm starving.
Lilah: Thank you for having us here, Katiebabs! It’s been quite an experience. Now, you come on into the kitchen with me and I’ll show you my Aunt Bertie’s method for mixing up the quickest batch of buttermilk cornbread you’ve ever seen. A little butter, a little honey or hot pepper jelly—you’ll think you’re in heaven!
Devon: Or, you could come back to my penthouse with me, and I’ll whip you up a quick Japanese breakfast with nori and pickled vegetables. Something elegant and refined—none of that slop Lilah calls food.
Lilah: Let’s put it to a taste test, shall we? I’ll stick my collards up against your seaweed any day of the week. Katiebabs, are you in?
KB: *Pats growling stomach* lead on to the food!

I love to cook chicken piccata in the kitchen!

Thank you for creating some wonderful stories, Louisa.
I love to bake - cakes, cookies, breads. Although I did just discover a risotto recipe that is incredibly easy but tastes and looks as if I slaved over it for hours.
Oh my gosh, what a wonderful contest! And what a great sounding book!! I'm always awful at coming up with good questions to ask (I think I get nervous and forget everything!) so onto my favorite dish to make it is!
I'm not the cook of the household, usually, but there is one meal I do help prepare and enjoy - Beef Stew. It's a fairly simple recipe, just takes a while to make. But we all usually sit around and chat while cutting up veggies, and it becomes almost a family affair to make it, which is always fun. And it was my Grandmother's recipe, so that adds a bit more "home" to the taste.
Now that I've ranted, lol... Thanks again for the contest!

What a fun idea for an interview! Congrats to you both!
Love the interview! Louisa, what's your favorite meal to prepare?

What a great interview! So much fun to hear from everyone outside the covers of the book.
My favorite thing to cook is definitely cookies. I have a whole shelf of cookbooks devoted solely to different kinds of cookies, and people refer to me as "the cookie lady."
That said, I like to cook in general, so I tend to make all kinds of things. Lately we've been on a breadmaking kick, thanks to Jim Lahey's book My Bread, which makes it obscenely easy to make your own bread.
too cute!
First of all, big thanks to Katiebabs for conducting such a fun, unique interview!
Kate - Mmm...chicken piccata! That's one I love to eat, but have never made.
Susan - Sounds like you hit the jackpot with that risotto recipe. And your family and friends hit the jackpot with you! Some of my fave people in the world are bakers. : )
Morning Glow - I love your beef stew story! That's the best kind of recipe, and what I love about food in general--the way it brings people together.
Tia - Thanks! The Market crew and I had a great time with those questions. ; )
Amber S - Hm, my favorite meal to cook? I love to try new things, but for standby classics, there's little more satisfying than a perfect roast chicken with root vegetables. Can't be beat, and so simple and fun.
Laura - The Cookie Lady! I love it. And I'm definitely going to look up that Lahey book; I've never had great success with bread, but I love the homemade stuff more than life. Must conquer it!
Thanks for a wild, wacky, wonderful post : )
I love to make soup and bake bread. Since we had more snow days than ususal this Winter, I really indulged my soup and bread routine. White bread, wheat bread, rolls, breadsticks, and soups that were never made the same way twice. Lots of quick breads and fresh apple cakes, too : ) I also came up with a wicked shrimp and pasta dish made with lots of butter, garlic, and Parmesan cheese. Very simple, all in one skillet, toss in cooked pasta and a little coarsely ground black pepper. Serve with a very nice, chilled white wine and the aforementioned breadsticks. If desired, add a green salad.

Great interview, very fun.
Sadly I am not the best cook, but I can make a good pizza or basic pasta, so those would have to be my favorites.
Thanks!

Louisa, such a funny and sweet interview. Thank you. I can't wait to read your book. I have it on my wish list.
I am a baker. I go all out at Christmas baking 3 layer Red Velvet Cakes with filling and icing, coconut cake, Weddding cookies, Fruit Cake cookies, more cookies, fudge, divinity, and so on. LOL
Thanks for the opportunity to enter.

Keri - Hi! *waves*
Virginia - OMG, I'm so making that pasta. Sounds scrumptious!
Donna S - Mmm, homemade pizza, always a winner! I made one recently with roasted eggplant, red pepper flakes, and garlic. Divine.
Miss Kallie - I bet your neighbors and friends love you during the holidays! Those cookies sound fab. And good luck in the drawing!
Louisa--
Does your writing make you hungry? You deal with all these kitchen-savvy folks and food, food, food! What do you eat/drink when you're writing? Thanks for visiting today.
Louisa - loved Can't Stand the Heat and am looking forward to reading On the Steamy Side!
As much as I hate to cook, I do like reading about cooks...I do not know why. My husband is a great cook; when the kids hear it's my turn to cook they ask if we can eat out.
Since my tummy is currently rumbling I feel like talking about food. My favorite kinds of food to make are comfort foods. I truly think I could live on mashed potatoes....I make many variations. There's garlic ones, ones that I put sour cream and parmesan cheese in, and another where I put bacon bits and sour cream in also. Along with comfort foods, I'm a mushroom junkie. I could gorge myself on stuffed mushrooms if I wasn't being held back. That, and mushroom stroganoff. Mmmmmm, I'm making myself even hungrier talking about this.

LSUReader - I totally get hungry while writing! That's how I know it's a good kitchen scene, if the food on the page is so tempting it's all I can do to stay at my desk. : ) I try to drink a lot of water while writing, but I'm also addicted to iced coffee and Sweet Leaf green tea with mint. As for snacks, I love Pirate's Booty and bananas with peanut butter.
Patti - I'm looking forward to you reading OtSS too! Can't wait to hear what you think. Maybe reading about chefs is like fantasy wish fulfillment for you--I'm not a Regency debutante, but I sure like reading about them!
Joder - Mmmm...mushrooms. You reminded me I have a bunch of exotic mushrooms in my fridge right now that I need to use! Maybe a risotto?
Great interview. I've been wanting to read these books. I think I'm with Lilah and I'm more of a collards girl than a seaweed girl.
As for what I like to cook - I think the favorite in our house is mexican food. Just to prove it my kids ask for quesadillas not grilled cheese :)

I don't cook very much because it's just me and I can't hardly cook for one person. Two things I really like to cook are Chili and Vegetable soup.

Wonderful interview. My question to Louisa is: Do you cook for inspirations for your book? What is your muse?
I love making pasta, fried rice, and some other dishes.

I loved this interview!! What fun! I actually let my son do the cooking:) He loves to cook and can whip up a mean homemade spaghetti sauce!

Thanks!!
This sounds like a fun book. :) I have SO many things I like to cook. Recently I made a really yummy lemon butter chicken dish that was SO GOOD. Found it in a Martha Stewart magazine and adapted it a little. Very easy and tasty. In fact, I could go for some right now.
What a great, fun interview! I can't wait to read this book. I like to cook pasta
myra0502@yahoo.com
Crystal - I love me some sushi, but if it came right down to a choice, I'm sure I'd pick collards, too. Or quesadillas! LOL
Sherry - Soups are so great; so many options and they last a good long time.
I Heart Book Gossip - Ooh, good question! I actually do find it very inspiring to be in the kitchen, even though I sometimes don't manage it much when I'm on deadline. But once the draft is done, the first thing I want to do is get cooking again. I find it very renewing and revitalizing, and I usually try to start with something I've never done before. Recently, I'm making a lot of savory tarts, trying to get my crust exactly right.
Jackie - Mmmm, you had me at cornbread! There is nothing better in the world.
Angie - How cool! I wonder if your son will go to culinary school.
KMont - Three of my favorite things! Lemon, butter, and chicken. Sounds awesome. I might have to look that one up!
Myra - Thank you for commenting!
Ms. Edwards. I love your books and can't wait to read this one.
When I think of good food I always think of sex as well. A great dinner puts me in the mood. Like the eating scene in "Tom Jones".
Or "Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe"(Jacqueline Bisset and George Segal--RENT IT)where food and sex are intertwined in several scenes ("I will make love to you seven times...)
I've never had sex with a chef but they must be terrific!

I enjoyed the interview very much. I enjoy cooking and I like cooking comfort foods. One of my favorites to cook is potato soup, I make mine with noodles in it and my family loves it. I also enjoy making lasagna.

Last night I made a meatloaf and baked potatoes....Wow, what a wonderful meal and the heavenly scent was detectable from the garage!!! Not a fancy food, but one I love to make and my family always enjoys. It's simple, easy to prepare and always good!!!

That was such a fun interview. I love it when characters come out to play you get an additional insight into the book which I love.
I've not read either of these books, but would love to read them.
Louisa, this question is for you. What is your favorite scene from On the Steamy side and why?
Thanks!

I like to bake! But weirdly enough...I'm not that fond of eating baked goods. :) I like giving it out to others...sharing the wealth.
Louisa, how did you come up with this wonderful blend of romance and food? Did you meld two of your passions together or is it a fantasy of yours to be in command of your own restaurant?
