In the mood for a dark, intense and smoldering sexy read that may have you gasping for breath? Nalini Singh delivers this in ways you can’t imagine with Archangel’s Kiss, the second book in her Guild Hunter Novel series. The first book, Angels' Blood introduced vampire hunter Elena Deveraux, who lives in an alternate New York City universe where angels rule and are things of wonder to bow down to and be very afraid of. Elena was ordered to hunt down a supernatural serial killer than ended up being an archangel. The seductive and dangerous archangel that rules New York City, Raphael, is thousands of years old and has decided that Elena will be his new sexual pet. They engage in a battle of wits and an almost disturbing sexual dance as she hunted for this killer while Raphael hunted her at the same time.
Angels' Blood ended with Elena and Raphael killing the serial killer. Elena died from the outcome, but Raphael was able to save her. Now Elena is the first human in a millennia to be changed into an angel. Archangel’s Kiss begins after a year, where Elena was in a coma, has now awakened and is recovering, hidden away for her safety at the Refuge, where angels are all around her. Human are unaware of this place and only the angel’s vampire servants are welcomed. Elena, being hunter born is now an anomaly. She is very much like a new born, who’s learning to walk, or rather learning to fly. Raphael is there to help her, but their relationship, which is very new and scary, could go either way. Elena has come to love Raphael, the superior archangel who owns her heart, but Raphael is so used to taking what he wants and to treat Elena as his equal and not as a pet or a possession makes things very unstable between the two. Plus, there’s a possibility that Raphael could still kill her.
Raphael is close to amoral as you can get and has lived many centuries as both a ruler and treated like a god. He longs to engage in mind numbing sex with his new angel mate, but because she’s still weak and his wild and brutal appetite could break her while they are intimate, he holds back. Raphael is quite the giver to the point where Elena may break any way because she’s so frustrated because of the way his foreplay (Raphael uses his finger and mouth to give Elena satisfaction). Raphael has an elite group of warriors, called his Seven, which is a tight-knit group of vampires and angels who protect Raphael against any threats and danger. And now their most important responsibility is to protect Elena from being killed by Raphael’s fellow archangels, including Michaela, a very deranged and unstable archangel who despises Elena with a passion.
As Elena goes through angel physical therapy, she keeps having nightmares about her mother’s and sisters’ brutal murders, as well as trying to understand why her father has turned his back on her. Also, one of the oldest archangel’s still living on Earth, Zhou Lijuan, has invited Elena to the Forbidden City. This invitation is a trap because Lijuan is creating a new race of undead, an army, where she can truly be a god in every sense of the word. Then angels and vampires are being brutally murdered, even angel children. And because of Elena’s special tracking powers, she’ll try to find this killer who may be in league with Lijuan. Elena must watch over her shoulder because she’s an easy target. And because Raphael’s feelings for Elena sometimes confuse him, he may lash out and become something he doesn’t want be. As long as Elena can love and accept him for who he is, they can be together for all eternity.
Archangel’s Kiss is an amazing, well written, awesome world building book that I couldn’t put down. You can see how far Nalini has come with her writing and character building. She excels in writing such interesting characters, from Raphael who’s an amoral hero who walks a fine line into villainy, to Elena who puts all other urban fantasy/paranormal heroines to shame. The secondary characters of, Illium, a happy go lucky loving angel, is one that needs his own story. Even the near psycho Michaela with her questionable actions keeps the reader on their toes.
There is so much going on with these pages. Intense is the perfect word when describing Archangel’s Kiss. The sensuality between Raphael and Elena is explosive and Nalini explains things she didn’t in Angels' Blood. I really can’t find any faults except for the fact that the religious aspect is glazed over in regards to these angels. It may not be a big deal, but I would be interested in knowing more about these angel’s background, as in if there is a higher power ruling over these creatures and a Heaven and Hell, or they’re just a special society that always has been around.
I would recommend you read Angels' Blood first before Archangel’s Kiss. It introduces the world and characters why they act the way they do. I can see many placing Archangel’s Kiss in their top ten lists for 2010, especially because of Raphael, that very original character, who through love has found a way to keep his heart’s desire with him forever. Sometimes, I question how a supernatural couple can sustain their love in a believable way for hundreds or thousands of years? Nalini has given us proof that this is possible with Elena and Raphael. I’m already anxious to read their next installment. (February, Berkley Sensation)
Final Grade: A *and a possible top 20 best read for 2010*

YAY!! Awesome review. Can't wait to read it!!!
Do you KNOW how much I want to read this book, KB?? Such a great review - you've made me even more excited!
:) *tries not to be jealous*
Kaz
I. want. this. book!!!!! This review makes me want to pre-order on Amazon just to stare at the cover.
*WANT*
I have this book in my stack to be reviewed, and I still have another book in front of it. It's currently mocking me from the stack. LOL!
I didn't read the review because I want to go in completely unbiased (yeah, right considering I'm a Singh fangrrl). But Yay! I love her stuff.
I'm so excited for this book, you have no idea. ANGELS' BLOOD was one of my most absolute favorite books of 2009 so to hear you enjoyed this one even more than the first makes me very happy! Can't wait.
Oh, thank you KB! I am looking forward to this. I had mixed emotions about Angels' Blood. I did enjoy it, but Elena pushed all my UF heroine buttons :) I think (I hope) this book may be a little different.
I'm so clamoring for Archangel's Kiss and going by your review KB it is going to be on thrillride of a read. The minute this book is in my MB it is going to be devoured.
Wow, an A? I gotta say, I'm pleased for you. I know how little you award those. :)
I have to say, at the moment I'm not enjoying this one as much as the first. Your review has given me hope though so I'll pick it back up tonight with renewed persistence. One thing I do like and it's inherent in all of Singh's writing: the paragraphs are nice and short and this helps keep the book's pace nice and snappy.
Great review, KB! Angels' Blood was in my top 5 in 2009, and I've really been looking forward to Archangel's Kiss. After reading your review, I now want to go back an re-read AB to get back into Nalini's amazing world.
*covering my eyes so I don't see the spoilers*
This book is on my TBB list - love the cover!

Really excited about this book. Thanks for the review!
I'm going to read this. That goes without saying. ;)
I want I want I want!!
I just finished Angel's Blood! and it was amazing!!!
I'm a little apprehensive about Archangel's Kiss. Angel's Blood was probably my biggest disappointment of 2009 -- not because it was a bad book...it wasn't...but rather because all the reviews I read (before the book's publication) were SO glowing that I expected A LOT, and the book just didn't live up to those high expectations. So I'm reading your review through squinted eyes and obscuring fingers, curious and eager to know more, but afraid of getting my hopes up.
Nevertheless, I pre-ordered Archangel's Kiss yesterday, so I guess I'll know one way or the other in a couple weeks.

Nifty: AK is a much tighter than Angels' Blood. There is more of emphasis on her characters, which Nalini really excels at. Also, the setting of the angel Refuge and the interactions Elena has with her angel counterparts really works.
And the sexual tension between Raphael and Elena is even deeper, hotter and intense.
Okay, just finished ARCHANGEL'S KISS and I liked it better than ANGEL'S BLOOD. Maybe staying away from the "pre-reviews" helped. Dunno. I liked seeing Elena have to re-learn her body and skills. Too often in PNR, authors give their characters more and more power until they transform into omnipotent caricatures. But here, Singh gave Elena new powers, but ALSO new limitations: she's no longer the strongest or fastest, and she has to learn how to maneuver around her wings. Loved the development of the relationship between Raphael and Elena. In the previous book, I was willing to buy their love, but it was a blind sort of acceptance. Here, we see them relating to each other as PARTNERS, with mutual respect and trust. Big thumbs up. Also a big thumbs up for the amped-up sizzle factor! Yay!
The weakness of the book for me was the very ending, the final chapters/scenes with Lijuan. Rather anticlimactic. It almost seemed like Singh ran out of "room" -- like page- or word-count limits had forced her to severely edit those final scenes.
Very much looking forward to the next book. I hope it continues to focus on E&R, as I think they have more story to tell. I like the Seven and want to learn more about them, but I'm not keen to see each of them given his own romance, a la the BDB.

Nisha: Isn't Nalini great? Wait until you get a load of Raphael in this one. *HOT*
Eva: :) nom nom Nalini nom.
Mandi: Word.
Karen: You must read the hot angel on a sex stick.
Smokin: Hee. My work here is done.
Kati: Total fan girl also, as you well know.
Christine: If you loved AB, you will love this as well, perhaps even more.
Orannia: I would say it is different. can't wait to see what you think.
Leontine: :) YAY!!
Kmont: Eh, what can I say?
MsM: *pulls off hands* no covering eyes! LOL
Melissa: Thanks for reading!
Heidenkind: :)
Natasha: Yes, want....
Nifty: I know some had issues with Elena being weak, but I felt it worked because she is recovering from a great trauma, dying and all that bad stuff... etc...
The sizzle factor was beyond intense, even though Raphael sustained because he didn't want to break her. I had to laugh about that because I kept visualizing his wee-wee as a jack hammer or something.
Hm, interesting thought on the issue with Lijuan. I can see that. I wanted more of a bloodthirsty battle myself.
"Sometimes, I question how a supernatural couple can sustain their love in a believable way for hundreds or thousands of years? Nalini has given us proof that this is possible with Elena and Raphael."
After reading AK, I couldn't agree more with that statement. Like Nifty said above, in the first book, I kind of just "bought" their love and accepted it. However, after this book, I understand it & it truly works. They "get" & accept each other. Thus, I find myself loving this book (and Raphael) more than the first (which I didn't think was possible). However, I also found the ending to be anticlimactic & short. I was expecting much more to occur in relation to the reborn & Lijuan. It all happened very quickly. Nevertheless, that is rather insignificant compared to what I wanted most out of the book, which was an emphasis on Raphael & Elena's relationship. And Nalini definitely delivered there. :)
