Katiebabs' Official Best Books Of 2009

Welcome all to the last day of 2009 and the one reading list you’ve all been waiting for… KB’s Best Books of 2009!

I’ve read a grand total of 258 books this year and out of this massive list, I had the daunting task of deciding which books would end up as my favorite top 20, as well as categories for books that deserve special mentions. Just like last’s year’s best books list, I have broken it down into specific categories along with an honorable mention for each.

Some of the categories are familiar ones from last year, but I also added new ones to shake things up a bit.

Even with the large amount of books I’ve read, there are so many other books I haven’t read this year that deserve many accolades. My list is very selective as most of the various end year best book lists out there. Hopefully, some of my picks will be yours or ones you haven’t read that you may want to search out for yourselves.

So, without further ado, I give you KB’s best books of 2009:

Overall Favorite Read: Demon Forged by Meljean Brook
Honorary Mention: Written on Your Skin by Meredith Duran

Favorite Contemporary: Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James

*New Category* Favorite GLBT Book: Butterfly Tattoo by Deidre Knight

Favorite Hero: Alejandro aka Olek from Demon Forged
Honorary Mention: Earl of Banallt from Scandal

Honorary Mention: (Tie) Irena from Demon Forged, Elena Deveraux from Angels’ Blood (Nalini Singh)

Favorite Sex Scene: Demon Forged: When Irena shows Alejandro how much she really wants him with the help of an Alejandro statue she created.
Honorary Mention: Angels' Blood: Bathtub sex between Raphael and Elena.

And there is always one very special book that has affected me deeply as a reader, where I feel I am a better person after reading it. Deidre Knight’s Butterfly Tattoo deserves this special mention as the most poignant and emotional book I read this year. Butterfly Tattoo is such a book that has opened my eyes in ways no other book I have read this year has accomplished. Thank you Deidre for an incredible masterpiece of writing.

Blogs That Brought Me Joy in 2009

I checked my Google Reader and I follow 260 blogs. The blogs range from book bloggers, Hollywood blogs that report television and movie news, book publishing blogs and the wild and wacky blogs that make me laugh and moan throughout the day.

Out of these blogs I follow, I give you my favorite 20 blogs (much like my top 20 books for 2009 I will post) I recommend you visit. These blogs really stuck out for me and keep me up to date on the news I mention in my blog in posts or fills my head with even more useless information I can shout out at parties or if there is an awkward silence during a date. These aren’t in any specific order:

1. Adventures in Katidom. How can I not mention my Kati #2? Her blog is a perfect place to discuss anything from books, movies and sports. Kati’s posts are insightful, engaging and she is also quirky.

2. Bits & Pieces. Ever wonder where I get the majority of my subjects for my Sunday WTFckery posts? Started by Jonco in 2002. He finds the most funny, amazing, interesting and sometimes WTF things on the internet. Pictures, videos, newspaper articles, you name it, Jonco will post it. His motto- “We scout the web so you don’t have to.”

3. Book Smugglers. Ana and Thea’s blog is one of the most professional and well put together ones out there. Their dedication and hard work cannot be compared to anyone running a blog today. If there is one blog, we bloggers should strive to be like, it is our friendly, adorable Book Smugglers.

6. Cute Overload. I am one of the 150,000 subscribers to his blog that makes you AWWW and faint from the abundance of cute animals and babies Meg, the Chief Citeologist posts daily. I let out a big squee when I was given the 2010 Cute Overload flip calendar they have out. Now you know where I find the majority of those so cute I want to die kitten videos.

7. Dear Author. DA has become a big influence and great place for discussion on the publishing world from book reviews, publishing commentary and everything you need to know about electronic media. Sometimes it gets a bit too down and dirty with the comments but it’s a place for people to come forward and give their opinions and say it loud and proud.

8. Deadline Hollywood Daily. Nikki Finke is incredibly snarky and so on point when it comes to the world of Hollywood. Her gossip and information is perfect and because of that, television and movie executives shake in their $500 shoes hoping they aren’t next to be posted on her blog.

9. Karen Knows Best. The only blog I know of where the owner Karen has a takes no prisoner attitude. She tells it like it is and if you disagree, you better have some evidence to back you up. And even if you do, Karen doesn’t care. Sometimes we need people like Karen to open her mouth and tells us like it is. She scares me as well as makes me laugh.

10. Kris N Good Books. Kris from Down Under makes me laugh so hard my stomach hurts. She is silly, fun loving and a bit disturbing. Her posts about sex acts in the romances she read, especially in MM books, will shock you in so many ways, but you will want to join in on the discussion. If you are having a very bad day, stop by Kris’s. She will welcome you with open arms, pat you on the head and have you find that smile you lost. Kris also makes sure everyone has a cookie. What type of cookie, you ask? Stop at her blog and you’ll see the luscious ones she posts.

11. Lurv Ala Mode. Kmont runs one of the best book blogs out there. She is a huge supporter of Fantasy, Paranormal and Young Adult books and her discussion posts really make you think. She is also a bit wacky and loves to read like I do. She is one of the blogs I look up to and one of the people I go for advice on books and life in general.

12. Monkey Bear Reviews. Sarah has a great way of reviewing books and loves the romance genre. I love her discussions, especially those about family and character relationships in the books she reads.

13. Moonlight to Twilight. Ms. Moonlight has a wonderful eccentric blog about her love of books, the best in WTFckery and her appreciation for the male body- she loves men flesh plain and simple!

14. My Milk Toof. The most adorable blog ever!! Inhae posts about the adventures of her two milk teef that will make you into a pile of gooey, precious mush.

15. Nose in a Book. Lisabea aka MM Romance author LB Gregg is the main reason I started reading Gay Romance. Her personality and love of life and dedication to her family is a wonderful thing to read.

16. Racy Romance Reviews. Jessica’s insight and knowledge amazes me. A professor who loves romances and looks at the world in a way I never have before.

17. Regretsy. Another go to blog for everything WTF in art, crafts and clothing. The picture of Bear and Naked Girl with Mittens says it all.

18. Reviews by Jessewave. The only blog I know of that exclusively discusses MM books, authors and movies. Jesse’s site has grown by leaps and bounds and has become a staple in the book blogging community.

19. Smexy Books. There are not many blogs that are centralized when it comes to talking and reviewing the romance genre. Mandi is one of them. In the short time she started blogging, she has become a go to blog for great reviews, promotion and just like me, she is proud of her Twilight fan addiction and doesn’t care. She talks about sex in a way that is respectable, fun and also at times very naughty.

20. The Trillionth Page. Author Carolyn Crane, who I fondly call CJ, has one of the smartest blogs out there. I feel a bit smarter after I finish reading a post by CJ. Sometimes I have no idea what she’s talking about and I may have to re-read her posts a few times to understand, but she is a great source of entertainment, knowledge and a wonderful human being.

And because I always have a spare…

21. Vault of Horror. B-Sol channels my inner horror movie fan geekiness. He isn’t just a fan of the horror world, but lives it, believes in it and finds such joy in it, much like I do with the romance genre. B-Sol is a pretty easy going guy who welcomes anyone to stop by and talk about the love of horror in books, movies and television.

These blogs mentioned are only a small list of the ones I visit on a day to day basis. If you click on the link on my sidebar where I have my blog roll, you’ll see all the other great blogs I will visit on any given day. The hard work that every person puts into their blog or website should be applauded no matter the amount of traffic or subscribers you have.

I stand up and cheer these 21 blogs that have given me great enjoyment and the other 200 + blogs I’ve read over the past year.

Because I’m limited in my space here, why not leave a comment and tell us what some of your favorite blogs are that you visited this year?

December was a pretty light reading month as you can see, but the majority of what I read were good reads.

I give you the non-stop overflowing TBR book shelves. In all seriousness, I have no more room for books and at any given moment they are about to fall over and litter my floor. Don't be surprised if you find me buried under a massive pile of them.

Mho has pulled out some select picks from  my TBR pile that he hopes to start reading in the next few weeks. Mho is always in the mood to read a great historical romance. He has yet another new crush on an author. Beverly Kendall's debut, Sinful Surrender (Zebra) will be released in January. And it's a Victorian historical romance! You can also find Beverly at her wonderful website The Season where she has some of the most incredible people stop by to guest post. Mho hopes to be a guest there very soon!

In the mood for some down and dirty Urban Fantasy books? Mho has what you need! Joss Ware's Beyond he Night and Nancy Holzner's Deadtown are two books that have some great buzz.

And don't forget, there's always room for a little succubi in our lives. Mho just likes reading about Jackie, the boobalcious succubus who is a sex fiend. Of course Mho wants to meet her now. Watch out Jill...
Mho's on the search for his own succubus!

This officially ends my reading record for 2009. Tomorrow I'll post my top book picks and "best of" categories for 2009.

KB’s Favorite Television Shows and Movies From 2009

As much as I love to read and talk books, I also love some great television and movies. Without further ado, I give you some of my favorite television shows and movies I’ve watched this year. Perhaps some of my picks are your own. And if not, maybe these recommendations can be new ones to keep in mind for future viewing.

KB’s Favorite Television Shows:

The Biggest Loser (NBC) This show is a big sob fest as contestants work toward a common goal where they try and lose massive amounts of weight to live a better life for themselves and their families. The big prize is $250,000 to the one who lose the most percentage of body mass. Every Tuesday night from 8-10pm I would sit and watch in awe as some people who weighed more than 300 pounds were able to loose more than half their weight in under a year.

Kitchen Nightmares (BBC America) Gordon Ramsey from Hell’s Kitchen fame goes into these poorly piss run restaurants and turns them around. Gordon shows a much gentler side but still curses up a storm and tells it like it is to these owners and chefs. Sometimes it’s disgusting and foul to watch, but at the end of every hour, Gordon is able to save these restaurants from ruin in his own extreme makeover actions.

TLC, Travel Channel and Food Network. Any shows on buying houses, fixing up houses, best scary rides, haunted houses that will scare you so much you will piss your pants, best fast food that will kill you- are my guilty pleasures. Forget those shows about families with 20 kids, my favorite reality show is anything to do with houses and food I wish I could cook but would probably burn down my kitchen.

Nip/Tuck (FX) This show is my ultimate guilty pleasure. The outlandish adventures about two plastic surgeons in Los Angeles, CA owns me. This show jumped the shark the very first episode and keeps on delivering some of the freakiest, shocking, sick and disturbing stories and characters you will ever watch on television. Nip/Tuck also has a habit of showing a nice naked butt every so often from Julian McMahon aka Dr. Christian Troy who is the end all and be all of man whores in the history of television.

Perfect reason to post lickable Julian McMahon picture

CSI: Las Vegas (CBS) One of the longest running television dramas and after 10 years this show still delivers the good. Well written, acted and on the edge of your seat crimes that has me coming back week after week to solve along with the cast.

Dexter (Showtime) Who would have thought a serial killer who kills serial killers as a main character could work so well? Very quirky and addicting.

Mad Men (AMC) One of the best written shows I’ve ever watched. The phrase, “You’re money baby.” is perfect to use when describing this show that may possibly be one of the best of the 21st century thus far.

Spongebob Squarepants (Nickelodeon) This sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea will stop me in my tracks if it’s on television. The only cartoon where I can sit and watch for hours and want more. Spongebob channels the inner goofy, yet loveable kid in all of us.

Sesame Street (PBS) The best thing ever to air on television. The reason is perfectly explained in this video called "Celebrity Lullaby" where Ricky Gervais helps Elmo fall to sleep:

I know there are many movies missing from this list that I still must see, but here are five of my favorites movies from this year:

Star Trek. I am in no way shape or form a Trekkie fan but after seeing this, shall we say re-mastered version from JJ Abrams, I am a total Kirk and Spock fan. Did anyone else imagine being in the middle of a Kirk/Spock sandwich?

The Proposal. This isn’t a masterpiece of film making and has some inconstancies but Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds work pretty well together. They have some nice chemistry and any movie with Betty White playing someone’s spunky grandma is a must see. Reminded me of the old 1940’s screwball comedies with Cary Grant.

Perfect reason to post gratuitous Ryan Reynolds picture

Up. Pixar can do no wrong! Up will have you in happy tears about an old man, who is ready to give up on life, goes on an adventure of a lifetime in memory of his wife he loved dearly. One of the most uplifting and happy movies this year. How can you go wrong with a talking dog that makes you laugh. Feeling blue? Watch Up.

Always room to post adorable talking dog picture

Inglorious Basterds. It took my forever to say the word “inglorious” the correct way. This is on par with Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. A rip roaring dark comedy that takes place during World War II. You will scream- “Yee Haw” as you watch. Brad Pitt shines in this one.

Sherlock Holmes. Very well written, smart gritty movie. A Victorian CSI type mystery with two incredible actors that have great chemistry together. This may be my favorite movie I’ve seen this year. Major kudos to Robert Downey Jr. for taking on a much beloved character and playing it to perfection. I can see many writing Holmes/Watson slash in the next few months.

Don't they make a lovely couple?

I know I’m missing other great television shows and movies. Give me some of your favorites from 2009 that I can add in the good old Netflix cue to watch.

The KB 2009 Retrospective: The Small Things in Life Give You Strength

This post is the official start of my retrospective of the year that was 2009.

Excuse me for a moment as I talk about my life this past year. I had many ups and downs in 2009, probably like everyone else. I was in a wedding, went to a funeral, had a birth in my family and lost a job that still hasn’t been replaced. Funny how one event can change your outlook on life. But, sometimes we forget to take notice about the small things in our lives that can give us a moment of peace or a sense of joy and fulfillment we’ve been missing.

I’ve dedicated this post to these smaller events that have helped me through this year. Every time I think of them I feel everything will be okay, that the light is brighter at the end of the tunnel and when a door closes behind you, another one opens. And I can promise you, and myself, I will make sure to open those doors that remain closed to me. If I have to find a key or kick it in, I will.

I had a major epiphany the beginning of the year. Not just because my baby sister married but I finally have accepted the person I am both on the inside and outside. I grew up never thinking I was an attractive or pleasing to look at. This was in part to very low self-esteem issues and being overweight. And because of that, I could hardly look in the mirror. The day of my sister’s wedding, where my mother so kindly brought in hair and makeup people to do the bridesmaids’ hair and face, was a major event for me. As I stood staring at myself in my bedroom mirror with my hair, makeup and dress on, holding a bouquet of flowers, I didn’t turn away from my reflection in the mirror. For the first time ever, I couldn’t stop looking at myself. It finally hit me. In that small moment, as I looked at myself in all my fancy glory, right before I left to go to the church to see my sister marry, I came to the conclusion that I am beautiful. And even after I took down my hair, washed off the makeup and placed the dress in my closet, I still remain beautiful in my eyes. For once, no matter what anyone says, they can’t tell me otherwise, because the proof was right in front of me. Perhaps it has always been there?

Travelling to long distant places this year was another important event. Not only was it going to some place new, but meeting the people there mattered most of all. When I first became involved in the on-line world, I never thought I would make such great friends and acquaintances. So much so that sharing daily emails with a few has become the highlight of my day. From these emails, I was very lucky to meet a very special person who opened her home to me, without even meeting me. I hopped a plane and flew across the ocean nervous and scared as hell, not because I was meeting someone I had built a great relationship on line with, but for her to meet me. Meeting someone in person is very different than “talking” with them through emails or on blogs. Knowing when I walked off my plane and that person was there with a big smile and so very excited to meet me as I her, almost brought me to tears. My week in England will be one I will never forget because of her.

Speaking of on-line relationships, they can be so very powerful and heartfelt in ways I can’t explain. The same goes in regards to such a simple act from a person I have met only once and barely talked to in person but have the pleasure of communicating with her through emails and on-line. The pleasant shock on my birthday of finding a gift on my front steps, something I would have never expected, really floored me. I was speechless as well as giddy as a little girl by the thought and her kindness. And the shock continued to grow when that same person placed my name in the acknowledgements of her book this year.

That feeling of coming home everyday and not only have my parents there to ask about my day but seeing a small, black cat excited I was home to play with her. I now know  if I didn’t have my pet in my life, it would be a very dull one indeed. I never thought I would be a cat person, but after four months of owning a cat who keeps my neck warm during the cold winter days, takes naps with me in my bed, or sits on my lap as I read, is a lovely, all encompassing feeling that can’t be compared to anything else.

I have proudly embraced my eccentricities and this is in regards to Mho Fho. I know some think that giving an identity to a Bath and Body sheep is sad. A few months ago I almost came to the conclusion that this was true. Sometimes it takes one person to make you aware that this is not the case. I count myself very lucky that day I was with a friend who I expressed my worries to about this. She looked at me like I was crazy and said simply that my sheep makes people laugh and with so much stress and drama in out lives, my little fluffy sheep is something people need because it helps them forget all their worries, if only for a short time.

I am grateful to those who have welcomed me into their lives. That special friend I have dinner with almost weekly as we talk about what we want for ourselves in our futures, going to a friend’s newly renovated house, having lunch and eating massive cupcakes we can’t finish because they are too big. Seeing those I have come to care for succeed in their lives. My on-line buddies and one-on-one friends whose dreams of becoming published authors have already become a reality. I stand there and applaud their accomplishments and even though I wish the same for me, my joy for them holds no bounds.

My final long lasting memory from this year just happened this past weekend. Surrounding yourself with a group of people who accept you for who you are and know you so well can make all the difference in your life. You know my quirky and eccentric nature I talk about? My one friend I’ve known for over 5 years, who I’ll be joining on a cruise in May as her bridesmaid when she gets married, made sure to buy me the most off the wall Christmas gift because she gets me and knows me so well:

Yes, my new boyfriend does sparkle

I have to end on a ha-ha note as you can see.

These are only a few memories of this past year that gave me the will to go on and reach this point. The small things in life can give you a sense of calm. As 2009 closes, I wish you many great things, both big and small that give you joy and make you smile. And, when you look in the mirror, you can come to the same conclusion I did, and know you are beautiful. Just as you are beauty to others, the same goes for your life as well.

Lead Me On Book Review *Victoria Dahl*

Victoria Dahl has a great way of writing Dudley Doo Right heroines. At first glance, what you see is what you get. But this is never the case when getting to know a Dahl heroine. I love reading about these women, where they look inside themselves and come to the conclusion they want something better in their lives. It could be a new outlook on the way they live their life or perhaps letting out that libido they’ve ignored or never tapped into because they’re waiting for the right man to come along and guide them to that sexual nirvana we all wish we could experience.

Lead Me On is another solid romance with a heroine who tries so hard to turn her back on everything that made her into the woman she is today. Jane Morgan is everything prim and proper, but all for a reason. She is living a lie that eats her up inside. And the moment she meets William Chase, a hunky blue collar worker with lickable arm tattoos who owns a company where he blows up things, Jane must face her past and those demons that still chase her after so many years later.

Jane is the office manager for architect Quinn Jennings (hero in Start Me Up). Quinn would be lost without Jane because she keeps the office running smoothly. Jane’s life is also very orderly. She started dating an assistant district attorney because he embodies the perfect balance she’s been wanting all her life. But her attorney is pretty boring, among other things, and with that she breaks up with him to his shock. Jane will be turning thirty in a few days and longs for marriage and children, but wants hot sex. As Jane ponders a romance with a man who is respectable and can still give her smoldering, wall banging sex, her family matters are about to blow up in her face. Her brother Jessie is a major delinquent who’s been arrested for stealing. Her mother wants Jane to help Jessie because this time his actions will have major consequences. Also, Jane’s step-father, Mac, who is a former convict, but turned his life around, gives up on Jessie. Jane owes Mac a lot because when she was teenager, she was pretty wild, and he gave her guidance. Jane thinks of herself as a fraud because no matter how much she has changed on the outside she is still that former trailer park white trash party girl.

As soon as everything in Jane’s life starts going down the toilet, Chase makes his appearance. On the outside Chase is everything Jane wants to run away from. He looks exactly like those men she used to be attracted to that got her into so much trouble. But on the inside Chase is a big marshmallow. Chase and Jane’s lives have crossed once before even though it takes Chase sometime to figure it out. Chase is able to see the real woman Jane is inside and even though she tells him to hit the road, he won’t. He wants to crack the mystery that is Jane Morgan. He wants a relationship with her, not just a physical one even though she thinks sex will keep him at bay. But Chase is not easily manipulated and he is willing to take on Jane, her screwed up family, and help her brother who is being accused of murder. Jane’s world is crashing all around her and as much as she pushes Chase away, he keeps sticking around because he knows Jane is very special.

The way Chase and Jane interact with each other leads to some good times between them. These fun times are not just the sex, when Jane let’s go and is quite the wildcat, but the way Chase won’t back down from Jane’s ultimatums. Jane says some things to Chase that makes him walk away, but he always came back because he knows this is Jane’s way to cope and keep all emotional relationships at a distance. How Chase is so intuitive to Jane may take some suspension of belief, but the reason may be from their similar backgrounds.

Jane wishes everything was cut and dry and can’t understand that being perfect is not all it’s cracked up to be. Chase channels her imperfections. He wants her to embrace them and not just her passion and lust she has for him and the actual sex act she is able to enjoy. He wants her to loosen up and be proud of who she is because she has come so far from that vulnerable girl who almost went down a path her brother has travelled.

Chase and Jane are written as two very mature adults who are trying to find happiness and security even though they feel it eludes them. When they figure out they can’t change those around them, including those outside forces that cause them grief no matter how hard they try to elude them, then they can work on their new found feelings for one another. Their happily ever after will take work on both their ends but as long as they are honest with one another, they will be able to achieve it.

There are some moments of humor in Lead Me On, especially when you find out what Jane’s true name is and the way Chase tries to understand Jane’s desperate need for physical love. Chase refuses to be a stud service for Jane and he confronts her every chance he can get. Their encounters are steamy even though I would have liked a bit more of them over the investigating they do together in regard to Jessie.

I always find a Victoria Dahl book a pleasing read and so is the case of Lead Me On. Jane leads William Chase on a “merry chase”, and one readers will likely enjoy. I also give major kudos to Victoria writing a heroine, such as Jane, who underneath it all is a woman with sexual needs and is not ashamed to admit she has them and won’t settle for a dead fish in her bed. (January, HQN)

Final Grade: B

WTFckery Or Not? You Decide

Welcome to the last WTFckery post of 2009!

1. I am so unbelievably pissed and beyond shocked about this piece of ultimate WTFckery news. Posted on Yahoo Sports on 12/23 about psycho dog killer, abuser and inhumane bastard Michael Vicks:

"According to Philadelphia Eagles players, the most courageous man on the team in 2009 was one who started the year serving time in prison for an act of extreme cowardice.Today, the Eagles announced that Michael Vick was the 2009 winner of the Ed Block Courage Award, an honor given to a player who shows courage in the face of adversity. Each year, the Ed Block Courage Awards honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Recipients are selected by their teammates for team effort, as well as individual performance. The Ed Block Courage Award recipient symbolizes professionalism, great strength and dedication. He is also a community role model."

Who knew the NFL thinks a dog killer is a community role model? This is sick and disgusting. Why should you be punished for your actions when you are rewarded for having no remorse for making poor, defenseless animals suffer so you can make money? As an ower of a dog who lived to be the ripe old of age 16 and now a cat, I feel nothing but rage for a person who can harm a animal for monetary gain like Michael Vicks did.

2. We all need some Opihi Baby in our lives. This cover really makes me want to go out and buy this book about the deep connection between family, baby, and the aina. Thanks to Emmy for this one.

3. The fact that this book published is a WTFckery indeed. Birth Control is Sinful in the Christian Marriages and also Robbing God of Priesthood Children!! From AuthorHouse, 648 pages of HOW BIRTH CONTROL IS EVIL... IN ALL CAPS.

And WTF is up with the cover model's hair?

This review by G. Foster on Amazon gives a great overview about what this wonderful piece of literature is all about:

"WHENEVER I ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE CAPS LOCK KEY IN THE PAST, A LITTLE LIGHT WOULD COME ON. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT LIGHT WAS JESUS TRYING TO GET AT MY BRAIN. BUT ONCE I LET HIM IN AND BURNED ALL MY BOOKS AND CONDOMS, I REALIZED THAT THE ONLY CHRISTIAN WAY TO WRITE IS IN ALL CAPS. OTHERWISE THE HOLY SPIRIT WON'T GET ACROSS TO ANYBODY! THIS IS A FANTASTIC BOOK BUT MY BOOKSHELF IS A BIT SPARSE AS AFTER READING IT I BURNED ALL MY OTHER BOOKS, INCLUDING THE BIBLES AS THEY WERE WRITTEN PARTIALLY IN LOWERCASE LETTERS, OR AS I LIKE TO CALL THEM, THE DEVIL'S RUNES. CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND ME A GOOD ALLCAPS BIBLE?"

4. Because we all want a Kermit wearing Lady GaGa Barbie. Don't deny it, you know you want one:

5. Imagine having a never ending labido? It may not sound as fun as you think:

"The mother of two from New Mexico, was hurt in a collision two years ago, which damaged a nerve in her pelvis which controls desire, leaving it permanently switched on.She now becomes sexually aroused by the slightest movement – while vacuuming, sitting on a bus, bending over, or even simply walking across a room. She has been diagnosed with a rare condition called Restless Genital Syndrome, also known as Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome."

6. Jill Myles was talking about hamburgers on Twitter. We all should treat a well cooked hamburger like a penis. Want to make sure your hamburgers are the tastiest around? This website says it all.

"The best way to gauge the doneness of the burgers is to touch them. After you flip the burgers the first time, press the center to feel the outer firmness, and the softness underneath. Each time you flip them, you should touch them, so that you can feel the increasing firmness. A nicely-done rare hamburger (or steak) should feel like a semi-erect penis -- somewhat solid, but with a fair amount of "give" still. A medium burger should feel like an almost-fully erect member -- less give, but still some. If your burger or steak feels like a fully erect penis -- hard and with little give -- it's overdone. It shouldn't take you too long to recognize by feel when the burgers are done to your taste."

7. Snuggie circa 1975. Can you imagine wearing that out on a cold winter's night? Thanks to @has_bookpushers for this one.

8. Perfect reason not to eat frog's legs, especially with salt. Thanks to @rebyj for this freaky video:

9. And finally your Regretsy WTFckery of the week! A cross between the Blob and Grimace from McDonalds. I'm really not seeing the Cheshire Cat at all. And doesn't it look like it's sitting on some sort of strang toilet? *yes, I had to go there*

There is a new blog started by cbrett60 called The Blog Hall of Fame that will compile the best blog post around the internet an inducted them into the Hall of Fame each month. Guess what post was chosen for December and the very first inducted into the Blog Hall of Fame?

Enjoy this week's WTFckery and even more to come in 2010!

Love Advice From Love Doctor Mho Fho *Hollywood Dragon Loves J. Crew Girl*

Welcome to the latest Saturday Edition of Love Letters to Mho! The Love Doctor is in!

Yo M to the Mho!

I’m a mack daddy vampire who makes all the ladies swoon. If wanted, I could go off to Hollywood land and put all those fidiot lame-o actors to shame. Me and my boys (HOLLA BACK!) walk the streets in our tighter than tight leather macking out the shit kickers to the max while driving in our Hummers listening to 50 Cent, yo.

But, I have a issue that is giving me major heartburn. I need to screw every chicky that I can get my hands on cause the goddess I service has cursed me where I turn into a raving dragon beast that makes Godzilla look like a pansy. I’ve fallen hard for a woman who wears J. Crew sweaters, khaki pants and is everything sweet and wonderful. She is the total opposite of what I am.

How can I tell her that I’m an undead sexy vamp with great hair that kills our enemies who smell like they bathe in baby powder, as well as having anonymous sex with any woman to keep my dragon from popping up? My fine lady would drop my ass in a heartbeat.

I need some major prop advice my man!

Hit me back dude,

From RH

RH-

First, if I were your sweater wearing sweetheart I would drop your ass as fast as I could say “H to Izzo” because you sound like some wanna beach bum trolling for skanks on the boardwalk. It sounds like your lady has class so tone down the tween MTV slang and grow up.

Perhaps your new girlfriend wouldn’t mind riding your demon dragon? I hope that isn’t an euphuism for a certain part of your anatomy. If not, and you seriously become scaly, grab some chains, tell her to tie you to the bed and tame the wild beast.

Also, I recommend you figure out a way to break your curse. Think sacrifice, becoming humble and getting on your hands and knees and beg for forgiveness from your goddess because sticking your dragon’s python in those anonymous women will not go down will with your Gap wearing girl.

I hope my shizzle advice can give your nizzle major props,

Mho to the F Fho

Kris and KB Discuss Black Wade and the Wonders of Magna and Yaoi

My pal Kris from down under, who has her own blog called Kris 'N' Good Books, is a big fan of Japanese Yaoi and graphic novels. I've never been really interested in reading them until Kris posted about a MM pirate romance adventure graphic novel called Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love.

Synopsis: The rough and merciless pirate Black Wade and his band are the scare of the seven seas. And just like his greed for gold is insatiable, his sexual craving knows no boundaries as well: When they board a British ship, Wade takes Lieutenant Jack Wilkins as a prisoner to satisfy his lust. At first Wilkins struggles with all his might, but soon he has to acknowledge that he actually has pleasure in the eager sexual encounters with the handsome pirate. In the meantime his fiancĂ©e Annabeth is waiting wistfully for the return of Jack, not knowing if he’s still alive. And on the pirate ship emotions are running high as well: Buccaneer Marak keeps a jealous watch over the prisoner Jack. He would love to polish Wade’s gun barrel himself. Due to the rising nervousness Wade realizes that he cannot allow himself the tender feelings he begins to have for Jack. To prove how merciless he is, he maroons Jack on a raft and relinquishes him to the forces of the wide ocean.

After reading Kris' thoughts on Black Wade and also reading a review from Sarah at Rain of the Roof blog, I was more than intrigued because the essence of Black Wade is a swashbuckling pirate romance, but with two men.

As well as purchasing Black Wade, Kris kindly sent me my very first Yaoi by Hisami Shimada called Maid in Heaven. This is a very different type of book from Black Wade and I had two very different reactions to each book.

Synopsis: In place of his ailing grandma, Midori must become a maid for the young and handsome Asagi. Midori spends every day with his master, servicing his every want and need. However, each time Midori gets close to his master's "satisfaction" they are interrupted. Will this pretty-boy maid ever get to complete his services? Find out in this unique, cute and very erotic tale of love!

In this discussion Kris and I talk about both books, as well as the appeal of Yaoi and other type of graphic or magna novels. A word of warning, our discussion is a bit graphic, so beware!

Kris: After weeks and weeks of pimping, nagging and promising smutty treats, Katiebabs finally caved in (ie has the willpower of the size of an ant's leg) and tried her first m/m stories in graphic form. *wipes tear from eye* It was a very proud day for me... but not nearly as interesting for her Mumma who was reportedly very intrigued by what KB was reading. (I think that might be a post in itself. *hehehe*)

Anyways, being nosy, I wanted to know what she thought of the two books she read. Not only because I'm pretty sure these are the first she's read in this medium, but also because both represented very different m/m genres; one being a graphic novel in full colour and the other a yaoi manga. This was how our conversation went...

So, Katiebabs chook, I curious about what made you decide to take the plunge to try out these genres after all this time?

KB: Well, my friend from Oz, I’ve never been big into manga or yaoi before but after visiting a few blogs such as yours and the way you went on and on about the yaoi, I knew it was time for my cherry to be popped so to speak. I am all for trying a new type of reading experience and decided to give the yaoi magna a go.

Kris: *Translation: She couldn’t resist the temptation of pics of boy-on-boy action any longer.* Let’s talk about the graphic novel, Black Wade, first. You already know that I adore it and recommend it for the lush sensuality of the artwork alone, but what about you, Katiebabs chook? First impressions? Good and bad.

KB: I have to admit when I opened to a random page from Black Wade, my eyes went wide and I had to close it for a moment. Lush and sensual are two perfect words to describe this graphic novel. Nothing is left to the imagination. Body parts, actions and bodily fluids are drawn in such a realistic way. But even though the graphics may seem a bit “graphic” to some, there is a great story with in these pages of high seas adventure, passion and romance. I really liked how Black Wade was drawn and I could get a very good sense of Wade's personality as well as Jack’s.

Kris: I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there. A good artist can convey so much in a single panel of artwork. Be it the setting, the colour or facial expressions; it all works to give the reader the impression, as a whole or in parts, of the story together with the speech bubbles and other text (usually associated with world/scene building). Did it surprise you how little text was actually involved?

KB: I was expecting more text or dialogue, but the artwork really portrayed everything perfectly. Blade Wade reminds me of an animated movie. I couldn’t look away from the pictures and took my time soaking everything in. Franze & Andarle are amazing artists! Is this your first time looking at their yaoi magna? What was your favorite section of Black Wade?

Kris: Yes, it was my first time actually reading their work, although I’ve been drooling over their stuff for a while now. That damned Sarah is a pimp. LOL. My favourite section of Black Wade would have to be the love scene between Wade and Jack just before Jack is set adrift. I thought there was a real poignancy to the artwork, especially that one panel where they’ve just finished having sex and are kissing. *sigh* I’m such a sap. *g*

Their work isn’t really yaoi manga though. Manga is a particular genre/graphic form in its own right and is used to refer to comics produced in Japan. You may have noticed that you had to read the book I sent you from what we westerners think of as back-to-front?? Yaoi too is a genre all of its own and is a popular term used for m/m written by and aimed at we girly perves.

What did you think of your first yaoi, Maid in Heaven, Katiebabs chook? Was it difficult for you to work out how to read it?

KB: Why, my favorite section in Back Wade was yours also! I loved how Wade and Jack kissed and snuggled. The same goes when I read. I love lots of kissing and snuggling.

Maid in Heaven was a trip. First of all, I had to get used to reading it, because I didn’t know with yaoi, it I meant to be right to left. Also the cover is a bit deceiving because it looks like a man and a woman on the cover, when it is two males. I wonder if that is the norm in yaoi where one character looks more feminine over the other? Also I had to read slower because there was more dialogue and figuring out who said what and what came first.

Kris: LOL. Yeah, it takes a bit to get used to reading yaoi. Not only can it be confusing at times, but some translations leave a lot to be desired. It can certainly make for interesting reading.

To answer your question, it is generally the case that one character may look more feminine than the other, especially in the stories set during high school and college. Also, the yaoi formula for protags is based on the seme (the attacker/the seducer/the top) and the uke (the receiver/the innocent/the bottom). Artwork, dialogue and actions all tend to exaggerate the differences and power plays between the two roles/characters.

I think it’s actually the dub con (dubious consent) aspect of the seduction of the seemingly more weak of the two by the more powerful partner, which makes yaoi either love or hated by readers. I admit that this can come across as extreme is some of the more explicit yaoi, but in others it is clear that the dub con is meant to indicate the seme’s strong feelings.

Does that help explain some things about Maid in Heaven, although I did make sure to start you out on something that was relatively tame?

KB: Maid in Heaven reminded me much like a cartoon, especially with the reactions of the character. I did get a nice feel for the power play of the two characters. Exaggeration seems to be key here, especially when the couple is engaged in sex. Got to love the drawing of fluids being thrown around and the sound effects! LOL. What should I expect with more explicit yaoi?

Kris: More. Much more. *g* You’ve also seen me talk about O_o things such as self-lubing arses and copious amounts of cum so prepare yourself. LOL.

Getting back to expectations; were Black Wade and Maid in Heaven in particular what you expected? I’m also curious to know how you felt about seeing an m/m story played out in artwork, especially as the sex scenes leave nothing to the imagination.

KB: Blake Wade was an eye opener. Quite a sight to see Wade and his crew not minding how they hung out and walked around without a care. Lot of penises and using them in many ways. When Wade first forces Jack to take him in the mouth and behind the butt-butt, I couldn’t believe how authentic things look. Did make me a bit uncomfortable at first but then I lost myself in the story.

Maid in Heaven was just too cute, especially the way Midori, the maid acted with Asagi in the bedroom.

I noticed the yaoi has a habit of showing a great deal of fluids being licked, sucked and swallowed. Is this the norm?

Kris: Oh, yeah. Lots of cum and sweat all over the place in yaoi. It’s a wonder those boys don’t suffer more from dehydration. *snort*

I just recently read a yaoi novel where the guys went at it 8 times in a row. WTF?! As if. For some yaoi, it’s certainly a question of suspending disbelief… either that or throw the book at the wall because the chick writing it is so far into boy love dreamland that she probably thinks that cock-in-arse is the equivalent of the magical hoo-haa.

So, do you think you’ll be trying more yaoi? If you are, there’s this little thing called The Great Yaoi Swap that might interest you. ;)

KB: From the two yaoi it is a major suspense of disbelief! The fantasy of it all : )

I would love to join in on the Great Yaoi Swap. Perhaps you can go into more detail about it for those that are unaware?

Kris: Well, unaccustomed to pimping yaoi that I am ;)… basically it involves one huge book swap fest in which people who enjoy reading yaoi share books with each other. It is open to anyone and the books travel across the globe so if you’re willing to pay postage costs feel free to join in the fun. There’s about 10 of us who are doing it and we have nearly 50 books being circulated at the moment. New ones get added all the time cos some of us are unrepentant Book Sluts. LOL.

Shall I sign you up then, Katiebabs chook?

KB: I think you can pat yourself on the back because I maybe joining the Great Yaoi Swap and seeing as I am a Book Slut…

What are some of your favorite Yaoi or authors/artists?

Kris: *Yay me!* I must admit that I don’t much about m/m authors and artists of graphic novels/comics, although I’ve recently discovered, which is a YA superhero serial comic that I’m enjoying.

As for yaoi… God, where to start. *g* One of my favourite author/artists is Lily Hoshino. She is an autobuy for me. I heart her. Other series I would recommend are Ayano Yaname’s The Crimson Spell, Youko Nitta’s Embracing Love (Haru wo Daiteita), Hajin Yoo’s Totally Captivated and Makoto Tateno’s Hero Heel. These are all firmly on my keeper’s shelf. Before you go shopping though sweet ;), try a couple more yaoi books first. Some weirdos peeps decide they don’t like the genre after they’ve read a few. Be warned, however, that you may be struck off friends’ list for such misguidedness. Just sayin’.

So... anyone interested in some Yaoi to read?
