As much as I love to read and talk books, I also love some great television and movies. Without further ado, I give you some of my favorite television shows and movies I’ve watched this year. Perhaps some of my picks are your own. And if not, maybe these recommendations can be new ones to keep in mind for future viewing.
The Biggest Loser (NBC) This show is a big sob fest as contestants work toward a common goal where they try and lose massive amounts of weight to live a better life for themselves and their families. The big prize is $250,000 to the one who lose the most percentage of body mass. Every Tuesday night from 8-10pm I would sit and watch in awe as some people who weighed more than 300 pounds were able to loose more than half their weight in under a year.
Kitchen Nightmares (BBC America) Gordon Ramsey from Hell’s Kitchen fame goes into these poorly piss run restaurants and turns them around. Gordon shows a much gentler side but still curses up a storm and tells it like it is to these owners and chefs. Sometimes it’s disgusting and foul to watch, but at the end of every hour, Gordon is able to save these restaurants from ruin in his own extreme makeover actions.
TLC, Travel Channel and Food Network. Any shows on buying houses, fixing up houses, best scary rides, haunted houses that will scare you so much you will piss your pants, best fast food that will kill you- are my guilty pleasures. Forget those shows about families with 20 kids, my favorite reality show is anything to do with houses and food I wish I could cook but would probably burn down my kitchen.
Nip/Tuck (FX) This show is my ultimate guilty pleasure. The outlandish adventures about two plastic surgeons in Los Angeles, CA owns me. This show jumped the shark the very first episode and keeps on delivering some of the freakiest, shocking, sick and disturbing stories and characters you will ever watch on television. Nip/Tuck also has a habit of showing a nice naked butt every so often from Julian McMahon aka Dr. Christian Troy who is the end all and be all of man whores in the history of television.
Perfect reason to post lickable Julian McMahon picture
CSI: Las Vegas (CBS) One of the longest running television dramas and after 10 years this show still delivers the good. Well written, acted and on the edge of your seat crimes that has me coming back week after week to solve along with the cast.
Dexter (Showtime) Who would have thought a serial killer who kills serial killers as a main character could work so well? Very quirky and addicting.
Mad Men (AMC) One of the best written shows I’ve ever watched. The phrase, “You’re money baby.” is perfect to use when describing this show that may possibly be one of the best of the 21st century thus far.
Spongebob Squarepants (Nickelodeon) This sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea will stop me in my tracks if it’s on television. The only cartoon where I can sit and watch for hours and want more. Spongebob channels the inner goofy, yet loveable kid in all of us.
Sesame Street (PBS) The best thing ever to air on television. The reason is perfectly explained in this video called "Celebrity Lullaby" where Ricky Gervais helps Elmo fall to sleep:
I know there are many movies missing from this list that I still must see, but here are five of my favorites movies from this year:
Star Trek. I am in no way shape or form a Trekkie fan but after seeing this, shall we say re-mastered version from JJ Abrams, I am a total Kirk and Spock fan. Did anyone else imagine being in the middle of a Kirk/Spock sandwich?
The Proposal. This isn’t a masterpiece of film making and has some inconstancies but Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds work pretty well together. They have some nice chemistry and any movie with Betty White playing someone’s spunky grandma is a must see. Reminded me of the old 1940’s screwball comedies with Cary Grant.
Perfect reason to post gratuitous Ryan Reynolds picture
Up. Pixar can do no wrong! Up will have you in happy tears about an old man, who is ready to give up on life, goes on an adventure of a lifetime in memory of his wife he loved dearly. One of the most uplifting and happy movies this year. How can you go wrong with a talking dog that makes you laugh. Feeling blue? Watch Up.
Always room to post adorable talking dog picture
Inglorious Basterds. It took my forever to say the word “inglorious” the correct way. This is on par with Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. A rip roaring dark comedy that takes place during World War II. You will scream- “Yee Haw” as you watch. Brad Pitt shines in this one.
Sherlock Holmes. Very well written, smart gritty movie. A Victorian CSI type mystery with two incredible actors that have great chemistry together. This may be my favorite movie I’ve seen this year. Major kudos to Robert Downey Jr. for taking on a much beloved character and playing it to perfection. I can see many writing Holmes/Watson slash in the next few months.
Don't they make a lovely couple?
I know I’m missing other great television shows and movies. Give me some of your favorites from 2009 that I can add in the good old Netflix cue to watch.

Katie turned me onto Modern Family. It's a dysfunctional sit-com that's hysterically funny. But then, I'm a bit twisted...Katie's not though...so it must work on all levels. LOL
I'm not sure if I agree with you on The Proposal, even though I lubs Sandra Bullock, but I get to see Sherlock tonight!! Yay! RDJ all the way!! And also, ooh, agreeing with you on the Dexter!!!'
Mon, moi, not twisted? You crazy, crazy woman. I'm TOTALLY twisted. LOL!
OK, I have to say that the scene w/Sandra Bulluck and Betty White around the campfire makes me laugh out loud. "To the windows, to the walls..." SO funny!
You seriously MUST see The Hangover.
Monica: I've only seen one episode of Modern Family so far even though our twisted Kati keeps raving about it. When the first season comes out on dvd, I will be sure to watch it- one shot, one kill ;)
CJ: The Proposal was cute and did show me Ryan's nice body... acting skills. Plus his dad is Craig T Nelson from the show Coach! I used to love that show.
Kati: OMG Betty White dancing around in fire had me peeing. Have you ever seen her on the late night talk shows? She is beyond funny.
Hangover is next in my Netflix cue!
I had a CSI: Las Vegas fixation for a long time but with so many people off the show I started with I think that did it for me.
I have noticed I will stop and watch Criminal Minds reruns more often lately. Strange.
LOL - I don't think we match much on anything so I can offer a few suggestions - I did love Star Trek too though.
I don't get to the show often, in fact that was the last one before Avatar. Loved Avatar though!
As far as television
So You Think You Can Dance is a don't miss.
I'm loving The Office the more I watch it.
And I've enjoyed Project Runway (I think that's it - anyway the one with Heidi Klume)
And that's all I can think of at the moment.
...SQUIRREL!
DUG: A squirrel walks up to a tree and says, "I forgot to store acorns for the winter and now I am dead." Ha! It is funny because the squirrel gets dead.
Just back from seeing Avatar...we (my best friend and I) watched it in 3D and WOW! Amazing! Oh, and KB, I saw Sherlock Holmes earlier this week, and it was very good. Very witty! I thought Robert Downey Jr was very good as Holmes.
As for TV...Glee has just started here and I love that. Another show I discovered and loved this year was The Big Bang Theory! So funny!
Definitely Mad Men and Star Wars. I've also been loving Dollhouse--it's so smart and unique, and how can you resist Tahmoh Penikett?
Thanks for sharing the Ricky Gervais video, that was a scream! (Lord I love him).
And I LOVED Sherlock Holmes!!! Loved loved loved loved.
And Star Trek. Loved loved loved. (Went to see it three times within a week). I plan on seeing Sherlock Holmes multiple times too, too much great banter to be seen only once.
So much yum this year! Great list.
I highly recommend Modern Family-HYSTERICAL!
Also Burn Notice (new episodes start in Jan!) which I love!!
Princess and the Frog for movies! Loved it, loved the music! Can't wait to see it again.
Teddy: I was so upset when William Peterson left. I thought I would stop watching but Laurence Fishburne is really good and the writing still great. I can't help myself but watch when there are repeats on Spike TV. And if there is a marathon, I am not moving for hours!
Kristie: For awhile I was addicted to watching Top Model with Tyra Banks. That show is a trip! My mom is a big fan of Dancing With the Stars but for some reason won't watch So You Think You Can Dance.
Orannia: I've been hearing big raves about Avatar. I am kind of meh about it. Always can watch when it comes out on dvd :)
Heidenkind: Mad Men is my absolute addiction. I'll be one of Don's chickies ;)
Leanna: Ricky G is too cue for words. I loved his reaction when Elmo said Brad Pitt is famous and he didn't know who Ricky was. LOL
There is a rumor that Ritchie wants Brad Pitt to play Moriarty in the Sherlock sequel. Can you imagine?? Perhaps Alan will pop up also? Hmmm...
Leslee: I totally forgot Burn Notice! All hail Bruce Campbell! I love cartoons so I will definitely check out Princess and the Frog.
